Walter "Shirl" Hone, our beloved husband, dad, brother, grandpa, great-grandpa, and friend, joined his eternal sweetheart in Heaven in the early hours of the morning on August 27, 2020. They are now rejoicing in Heaven together. He died of natural causes. Shirl was an amazing man who will be greatly missed.
Shirl was born on April 21, 1939 to Leon Hone and Glenna Wells Hone. He was a kind man who loved his dear wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren immensely. When his wife Susan became ill, he cared for her lovingly for many years until her passing. He would do anything for his family.
Shirl and Susan met at a young age and soon became engaged. He was asked to serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints before he married. He was afraid Susan would not wait for him; he couldn't let her get away, so they were married for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on October 3, 1958, after which he served a stake mission.
Together they had four children Wally (Christine), Suzette, Michelle Allen (Scott), Jeff (Debbie). Shirl taught his family to love and respect, and to always do good and right toward others. He was an honorable man who made friends with almost everyone he met.
He loved the outdoors. He loved going hunting and camping with his family. He enjoyed fishing and long drives in the mountains especially if he could find a dirt road to travel on. He was happiest when he was outdoors enjoying nature. Later in life he discovered Alaska and fell in love with its beauty. He spent several summers there fishing and camping. His greatest wish was to get just one more Alaska trip in before his passing.
Shirl served in the Army Reserves, in Fort Ord, California, for three and a half years. He then became a meat cutter by trade and owned his own meat cutting business for several years. After he retired Shirl and Susan enjoyed traveling throughout the western United States.
Shirl was preceded in death by his loving wife, his mother and father, and his sister Laura Lee Hone McConnell. He is survived by his four children and their spouses, eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, his brother, Lester Hone (Karen), and sister, Glennis Newbold (Kent).
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 from 11:00 - 11:45 at Goff Mortuary, 8090 South State Street. A graveside service will follow immediately after the viewing where family and friends will be invited to share their memories of Shirl. His interment will be at Lake Hills Cemetery located at 10055 South State Street in Sandy, Utah. He will be laid to rest next to his loving wife who he has been separated from for the last 16 years.
