Wally Shaw Scott

At the age of 92 years, our father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend Wallace Shaw Scott, died April 2025 in South Jordan, Utah. Wallace, known as ‘Wally’ was married to his sweetheart, Audrey Leach Scott for 66 years prior to her passing in 2021. He is survived by their children, Shawna (Tad) Norris, Kathy (Richard) Wood, Craig (Diane) Scott and Karen (Kevin) Barnes and 10 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren, who will miss him greatly.

Wally was very musically inclined. He played instruments in the school band and sang in school activities. Additionally, he sang with a quartet of his friends called The Sport Tones, at local events in Provo, Utah. His friendships with the members of that group lasted throughout his life. He was always a member of his ward church choir. A frequently told story by him was about winning a contest in 2nd grade, and the prize was to sing The Brahams Lullaby on the local radio station.

Wally worked many jobs throughout his life including delivering newspapers, farming, working at a car dealership, clerking at Geneva Steel, as a door-to-door milkman for Hiland Dairy and in retail sales. He sold GE appliances at Brinton Electric for over 30 years, until he retired.

As a young man, Wally obtained the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America. He would often relate that he was one of 24 young men obtained the rank of Eagle Scout in a 3-year period. As an adult scout leader, he loved working with youth in the Boy Scout program. He loved to tell and retell the escapades of his scouting experiences at Maple Dell, East Fork of the Bear and near Payson Lakes. He made sure that people knew that his “club feet” never stopped him from hiking with the scouts, as well as hiking many trails in Bryce Canyon and Zions Canyon National Parks with family. He enjoyed many camping trips throughout his life with his sisters and brothers and their families. He had good memories of riding horses in the mountains with them.

Wally left his home in Provo, Utah in April 1952 to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Switzerland. He learned to speak the German language from his first companion when he arrived in Switzerland. He had many fond memories of being among the Swiss people and of visiting the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Florence and the Vatican while in Europe.

The Saturday after Wally returned home from his missionary service, his sister Kathryn introduced him to Audrey Leach. He later wrote: “We dated. I liked her. We got engaged on April 1, 1955, and got married on June 16, 1955.” He made a great friendship with her brother Delmar and he and Audrey made many trips to spend time with him and his wife.

Wally and Audrey enjoyed spending time with the Wasatch Gem Society members. They made many dear friends from the group. Because of their association with the rock club members, they began staying winter months out on the desert in their travel trailer in Quartzsite, Arizona with their rockhound friends. Wally learned to polish rocks, and he made many bolo ties and necklaces from the gems acquired at the rock club events.

As parents and grandparents, Wally and Audrey attended school, church, music, theater, and sporting events that their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participated in. Often, they could be heard clapping and cheering them on.

For the last 5 weeks of his life, Wally lived at Legacy in South Jordan. There he met new people while enjoying the great food and activities that were available to the residents. He was treated very well by the staff of the care facility.

Our many thanks are expressed to the kind, compassionate, and loving care of Wally by the IHC Hospice care team, Ben, Eliza and Sheila for their consistent support on his behalf.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to your local ward missionary fund or to another charitable organization of your choice in the name of Wallace Scott.
