Varel Jean Mumford Wilson was born August 5, 1948 in Murray, Utah. She passed away quietly with family on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
She grew up on the "Lazy M” ranch in Sandy, Utah and was the third of six children. She graduated from Jordan High School and the University of Utah where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics Education.
She is survived by her loving husband, Kent Wilson, siblings Glade Mumford (Claudia), Valayne Larson (Steve), Royce Mumford (Lynette); her children Kenda Rose (Tim), Marlene Shelley (Adam), Kevin Wilson (Nicole), Cortney Wilson (Jody), Marnee Carter (Scott), 17 grandchildren (3 spouses) and 2 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents Victor Wayne Mumford and Helen Hansen, and her brothers Lee Mumford and Neal Mumford.
Varel had many talents including playing the piano and organ and being an excellent seamstress. She made all of her children’s clothes while they were growing up and made countless quilts.
Her hobbies included arts and crafts. She tried every craft you can think of and always did them well. In fact, she never met a craft she didn’t like.
She enjoyed the outdoors. She always had a healthy garden and a beautiful yard. Her family has many happy memories of camping in the mountains and taking road trips to many different places.
Varel has been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints her whole life. She served in various callings, but one of her favorites was serving with her husband when he was the Mission President of the San Bernardino, CA mission from 2004-2007. She faced many health trials throughout her life. Sometimes, they prevented her from doing things she wanted to do. Despite these trials, her family and friends knew she had a testimony of Jesus Christ and they were often strengthened by it.
