Thomas LeRoy Metcalfe, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend passed away on August 27, 2024 at Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi, Utah.He is preceded in death by his parents, Finus and Stella, his sister, Virginia, and his 4 brothers, Jack, Robert, Joe, Lee, and first wife LaRue Thomas , his son, Lee and Jason Douglas Judd, his great grandson.
He was 93 years old. He was born in Major County, Oklahoma on February 18, 1931 to Finus Bryan and Stella Cora Williams Metcalfe. When he was 3 years old, his father liked to have him drive the tractor because he liked his straight rows. When he was about 6, their family moved to Turner, Oregon (60 miles SE of Salem in an old, Model A, Ford pick up truck. He grew up working hard picking beans and working on the family farm.
When he was in high school, he lettered in four sports. He also played football and basketball for the Beavers in college, in Oregon. At the age of 92 he could still remember his classmates and the kids who sat by him on the bus.
He served in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Nellis. He was a handsome serviceman. He met LaRue Thomas Castellon and her son, Lee and later they were married at the Little Chapel of the West in Las Vegas on May 11, 1957. They had three more children, Greg, Kim, and Scott. He met Hal Mudget on his way to boot camp and they became fast friends. He spent many family vacations and hunting expeditions with Hal, and LaRue and Mary became fast friends. LaRue passed away in 1992.
Dad was an avid hunter. He also hunted with Danny Moses and they had some good times! He would hunt anything he could. He hunted duck, quail pheasant, deer and Elk. Tom was a TV and radio repairman and flew by airplane and helicopter to many radio sites on the mountains. He also worked at Area 51 and flew with Howard Hughes' pilot. He took flying lessons.
He worked for about 18 months at the Nevada test site sending off many balloons and watching 12 of the bombs go off, ( some were watched from his own pick-up truck.) He worked for Centel/Sprint for many years as an engineer and was a pioneer bringing Fiber Optics from California to Nevada and some of the big hotels.
He married Kallie J. (Jacqui,) Bazemore on August 17, 1996. They have been happy living in their home in Las Vegas.
Tom has 11 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. We know he is in a better place. He will be thought of often. He is a wonderful man and dearly missed.
