Midvale, Utah - Our beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, Theodore G. "Ted" Katis passed away peacefully in his family's home on December 10, 2020 as the result of a fall caused by a non-COVID related virus. Born May 25, 1953 in Murray, Utah to Gus M. and E. Jean Abrams Katis, he was the second of their six children.
He was a graduate of Hillcrest High School where he excelled on the debate team. If you planned to argue with him, you'd better come prepared! He came armed with logic and facts. Sometimes he would take a side he did not believe in just for the sport of it. He was also a gifted chess player and tennis enthusiast.
In January 2002, Ted was involved in an auto-train collision, which left him in a coma. The doctors told his parents to expect the worse. As happened too often in his life, the medical experts underestimated him. They didn't understand how stubborn Ted was or what a fierce fighter he was. With the unwavering love of his parents, he made a recovery that was deemed nothing short of a miracle.
The subsequent years proved to be some of the best of his life. He became a regular at the gym and treated himself daily to his "usual" at Starbucks, where the baristas all knew him by name. Always a voracious reader and history buff, he now spent hours deep in books about World War II. It wasn't unusual for him to announce some newly learned tidbit about a long-forgotten battle in the European Theater. There were also fishing trips (always wearing his Greek fisherman's cap) with friends in the Pacific Northwest. Ted also never missed a Utes game. He was Greek Orthodox.
Preceded in death by his father, grandparents, aunts, uncle, and cousin. He is survived by his mother, siblings Michael and Alexandria, Midvale; Dan (Marsha), Omaha; John, South Jordan; Christopher (Kelly Huntington), Murray; Uncle Chris Katis, Phoenix; Uncle Don (Sharon) Abrams, Waterville, Maine; seven nieces and nephews; seven great nieces and nephews; several cousins and many friends.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, no viewing or funeral will be held. A private graveside ceremony and interment are planned at Mount Olivet Cemetery. The family will a hold a Celebration of Life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in his honor to the charity of your choice.
May his memory be eternal.
