Sylvia Kertamus

Sylvia Joan Antell Kertamus, age 90, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2023 at her home. She was born on April 12, 1933 in Highland Boy, Utah to Albert Alfons Antell and Ruby Cora Baum. Sylvia was married to Norbert John Kertamus in June of 1956 in Elko, Nevada. She and Norbert were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple in 1960.

Sylvia graduated from Murray High School, class of 1951. She was very involved and was in the Booster Club, was senior class VP and a member of Girls League and went to Girls’ State. She won multiple awards for roller skating. When Norbert, also of the same high school graduating class, was home on leave from the Navy, he met Sylvia in the Murray Second Ward and a romance began. She worked at the telephone company as an operator to help her husband earn his PhD. After his graduation she lived in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Alliance, Ohio, Glendora, California, and Sandy, Utah since 1999. Known to her friends and family as Joan, she loved family gatherings and was at ease to discuss matters big and small. Sylvia was a gardener and homemaker. She possessed a keen mind and strong independence throughout her life. She was exceedingly well organized and resourceful. Sylvia was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She lived a covenantal life as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and considered her Temple Covenants and blessings of her family the greatest source of joy and satisfaction. She endured so well.

She is survived by her children Layne (Andrea) Kertamus, Lynne (Chris) Porter, and Leigh (Royce) Bonds. Sylvia and Norbert have nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Sylvia is survived by three younger sisters.

A viewing will be held on Friday, October 13, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Goff Mortuary, 8090 S. State Street in Midvale, Utah. Graveside services will be at Elysian Burial Gardens at 1075 East 4580 South, Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 11:00 AM. On her behalf we are grateful and wish to thank her family, friends, members of the Midvalley 4th Ward, physicians and caregivers. Donations are encouraged to be made to someone in need.
