Sonnie Bill Sutherland

Sonnie Bill Sutherland, 88, was born November 8, 1935 in Orem, Utah to Alger and Zella Sutherland. He passed away peacefully on October 23, 2024 in his home surrounded by his family. 

Bill married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Dawn Garfield, on November 13, 1954. Their marriage was later sealed in the Manti Temple. Bill and Pat’s love for each other was one of a kind, they have been inseparable for the last 70 years. They have four sons, Brad (Debbie), James (DeAnn), Michael (Tammie), and John (Jan) Sutherland. 

Bill worked for the Operating Engineers doing construction for much of his life. He also worked for the Juab County Road Department and served as a member of the Mona City Council. He enjoyed farming with his family by his side. Bill also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with his loved ones. Bill coached the Utah Jazz for many years from the comfort of his living room, alongside his daughter-in-law DeAnn (who was the team’s most vocal cheerleader). Had the Jazz been able to hear him, they would have been a more successful team. (Haha). 

Bill was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served faithfully in the Elder’s Quorum Presidency. He had a strong faith and love for the gospel and was a great example to his family. 

Bill is survived by his wife Patricia, his three sons Brad, Jim, and Mike, twelve grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren, his sister, Ann (Norman) Wall, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son John, parents Alger and Zella, brother Tom, sister-in-law Yvonne, and his in-laws, Leonard and Ruth Garfield. 

Our family would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Rosenbeck, the amazing nursing staff, Home Health and Hospice, and physical therapy at Central Valley Medical Center for providing excellent care to Bill. 

A viewing will be held on Sunday, October 27, 2024 from 6:00-8:00pm at the Anderson Funeral Home, located at 94 West 300 North, Nephi, Utah 84648. The funeral will be held on Monday, October 28, 2024 at the Mona First Ward Church at 11:00am. A viewing will be held one hour prior from 10:00-10:45am.
