Sidney Norris Sharp

Our beloved father, husband, and grandpa Sidney Norris Sharp, 83, passed away peacefully in his home in Midvale, Utah on Wednesday, May 30, 2018. He was born on July 17, 1934 in Midvale, Utah to Leonard Norris Sharp and Dorothy May Woodhead. He was the oldest of three children - brother to Lynn Sharp and Jean Brown.

Shortly after graduating from Jordan High School in Sandy, Utah in 1951, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served from 1951 to 1972. He was transferred to the retired list and advanced to Chief Warrant Officer (CWO3) in 1981. While stationed in Sasebo, Japan, he met his beautiful wife Ayako Sharp on the Navy Base, and they were married in Fukuoka, Japan on December 27, 1962. They celebrate 55 years of marriage. He loved serving his country and sharing his experiences and life lessons learned from serving. The greatest lesson he ever taught was the importance of fixing your bed first thing every morning.

Following his career in the Navy, he attended and graduated from Salt Lake Community College and Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah with degrees in Business and worked at Amfac corporation and Job Service in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sidney loved to share his vast knowledge in finance, taxes, and employment services to help those in need. He dedicated his entire life to serving his country, his family, and his fellow neighbor.  He was beloved by all who knew him and befriended so many both near and far.

Sidney was known for always being outside working in his yard, and keeping it immaculate. He loved his garden, which always successfully produced tomatoes, cucumbers, and green beans. He loved his green been growing contest with his grandkids who were anxious to see who would get the first sprout. The first to sprout received a new and crisp 2 dollar bill. He was also well-known for his famous pear apple tree. It was hard work pruning that tree, but he did it so he could give away pear apples to any and all, and what a treat it was to bite into one of those juicy apples! Sidney was young at heart and even in his early 80's he loved to jump rope, hula hoop, and run through the sprinklers with his grandkids. He also loved poetry and making up silly poems for people. This one was the last one he wrote:

A Skull Valley cowboy named Ted

discovered his herd was all dead.

Not caused by the gas

that he would pass,

but a leak from the depot instead.



When he wasn't helping someone in need, he was out fly-fishing and loved to catch fish on the flies that he tied. He was so proud of his fly collection and loved sharing his love of fishing with his daughter, and eventually his grandchildren, who he loved and cherished with his whole soul. Family was always first for Sidney. He would have done anything for any one of them at any time...and he did.

He leaves behind a beautiful and powerful legacy of service to others, generosity, hard work, discipline, and self-reliance. He is survived by his wife Ayako Sharp, his daughter Erica Shields, and his grandchildren Alexa Nofsinger, Taylor Nofsinger, Rocky Shields, and Rylie Shields.

We love you Dad, and will miss you every single day. As you used to always say, may you have fair winds and following seas. Until we meet again...

To honor his wishes, there will be no funeral or viewing services, but a private ceremony will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Littleton, CO at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to:

This is a farewell

it is not goodbye

as we stand wet-eyed

and try not to cry.

Interment will take place on Friday, September 14 at 11 a.m. in the Fort Logan National Cemetery, 4400 West Kenyon Ave., Denver, CO 80236, with full military honors supported by the Colorado Patriot Guard, and the Honor Bell Foundation, who will ring the Honor Bell in his honor.
