Sandra Burton

Sandra Jensen Burton, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend passed away surrounded by her family on February 24, 2022 after a short, but courageous battle with liver cancer.

Sandra was born on April 1, 1953 to Shirl and Beryl Jensen in Salt Lake City, Utah. She loved to play the piano, sew, visit relatives in Summit County, play with her Chihuahua, Tito and go on camping trips. She graduated from Olympus High School and earned her bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Utah State University. Education was very important to her, and it encompassed all parts of her life. She was a dedicated educator in Jordan School District at East Midvale, Oquirrh, and primarily Westvale Elementaries. She taught and inspired countless young people. She had a special ability to connect with and help students succeed including her own granddaughter, Miranda, who she taught in 5th grade. She also won an Outstanding Educator Award in 2017. Sandra lived, attended church, and worked in the same community for over 30 years. She is fondly remembered by so many who she associated with during that time.

Sandra married Steven Burton on June 12, 1974 in the Salt Lake Temple. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints serving in many capacities. She served in the Relief Society, Primary and Young Women's organization as well as the Young Single Adult Ward with Steve for many years. Many of these young single adults had also experienced her as a teacher in their elementary school. Their bonds of friendship extend to this day. Steve and Sandra also enjoyed serving as temple workers in both the Jordan River and Oquirrh Mountain Temples and made many dear friends there.

Sandra was very dedicated to her family. Steve and Sandra were always together and made quite a team. So much so that they even went to their cancer appointments and chemotherapy together in recent months. They built a life in both West Jordan and Levan. While she was raised in the city, Levan provided an opportunity to live and develop a love for the country lifestyle. For more than 20 years, they traveled to Levan every weekend to do what they loved, creating Levan Ridge Farm where they loved to raise lambs and goats and work outside in the garden together. In 2020, with Steve's cancer in the rearview mirror, they moved full time to Levan, to remodel their home, develop their farm and create a place for the family together. They always looked for ways to serve others. One of the highlights of her life was to host an annual Christmas dinner for the older single neighbors in her West Jordan ward. She also worked with Steve on the East African Refugee Goat Project and made many friends within that community.

She loved her children and grandchildren dearly. She was sure to attend every livestock show, dance recital, piano recital, and ballgame they participated in. She only missed when she became too sick to attend. She loved to sew, bake chocolate chip cookies and travel with her family. She especially loved to go to Disneyland, Yellowstone and spend time at the cabin in Midway.

She is survived by her husband, Steven, children Sonja (Oscar) and Jonathan (Andrea) as well as her grandchildren, Miranda Ferrufino, JaLeigh Burton, Rowen Ferrufino, Emma Burton and Andilyn Burton; sister-in-law, Kathy Richter (Bill) and brother-in-law Lynn Burton (Venna); sister, Rolayne White (Rick); many nieces and nephews who loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Scott Samuelson, for his skill and dedication to Sandra and Steve. The trusted nurses and caregivers at Utah Cancer Specialists continue to be second to none. We also appreciate Julianne Parkin from Central Valley Home and Hospice for helping us care for our wife and mom at a critical but very short time. We made an instant friendship with Julianne.

Services will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at noon at the Levan 2nd Ward Chapel, 25 N. 100 E. in Levan, Utah. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 2, 2022 from 6-8 pm at the Anderson Funeral Home, 94 W. 300 N., Nephi, Utah and before funeral services from 11-11:45 am at the Levan 2nd Ward Chapel in Levan, Utah.
