Russell Kay Penrose, age 86, returned peacefully to his heavenly home on July 19th, 2021 after a long illness. He was born the son of Wallace H. Penrose and Laura Ann Kay Penrose on February 7th, 1935.
Russ was a very active and fun-loving child who kept his parents on their toes. He loved fireworks, hunting with his dad, playing the drums and he was an avid bowler. He came from a very musical family and was blessed with a wonderful baritone-bass voice which blended beautifully in ward choirs. He also served his country in the United States Naval Reserves.
He met his beautiful bride, Shirley Lou Ancell at South High School in Salt Lake City. They were married 67 years and were blessed with 8 children.
His profession as a mechanical designer and safety engineer served his family well for many years. He was a great mentor and teacher for newly hired engineers and draftsmen. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings in the church. He and his loving wife served together at the Jordan River Temple for over 20 years. They were also service missionaries for the church and he served in the High Council of the Midvale Stake.
Russ had a great imagination and intellect. He enjoyed acting in the Mormon musicals "Promised Valley" and "Rendezvous" in the 1960's. He was also quite involved in several roadshows as a playwright. He was friendly to everyone and often went out of his way to help someone in need.
Russell is survived by his wife Shirley, his brother Wallace K (Clarine), sons Kevan (Sidney) and Ron (Leslie), daughter Sherrilyn Hawkes (Cody), daughter-in-law Sheri Penrose as well as 23 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Laura Mae Pace and Darlene Nielsen, sons Greg and David, daughters Pamela, Debra, and Denise, and daughter-in-law Caroline. We know that he is now enjoying being in their company.
A viewing will be held at Goff Mortuary (8090 S. State Street, Midvale) on Sunday, July 25th from 6-8 pm. Russell's funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (8350 S Jackson Street, Midvale) Monday, July 26th with a viewing from 11:00 - 11:45 am and services beginning at 12:00 noon. Burial will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park (3401 S. Highland Drive, Millcreek.)
We will all love and miss him.... Till we meet again.
