Our father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and lifelong teacher, Russell Lester Ferrin, passed away on Friday, February 10th, 2023, at the age of 70. Russ was born on Friday June 13th, 1952, in Salt Lake City, UT, to Ralph and Shirley Ferrin. After high school Russ enlisted for 2 years in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. After returning home he used the GI Bill to get a teaching degree and became a 6th grade school teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in Salt Lake City where he taught students for over 30 years. Russ loved helping his students learn the wonders of 6th grade before they headed off to Junior High. He kept in touch with many of his students for years after they had passed through his classroom and would run into a past student of his almost everywhere he went.
Russell married the love of his life, Diane Bagley, on February 17th, 1973, and they had two children, Ryan and Alecia. Russ and Diane were inseparable best friends (both school teachers!) and were married for almost 50 years. During their summers off they traveled the country together in a pop-up trailer to take in as much earthly beauty as they could.
Russ is preceded in death by his wife Diane, his parents Ralph and Shirley Ferrin, and his brother John (Gail) Ferrin. He is survived by his brother David (Korinn) Ferrin, son Ryan (Rachael) Ferrin, daughter Alecia (David) Wicklund, and grandchildren Theodore, Christopher, Chloe, and Aiden.
Russell's wish was to be cremated and for he and Diane's ashes to be spread in their rose bushes and in the mountains at a later date. Russ was not a fan of funerals and instead wanted a gathering of family and friends. An open house-style Celebration of Life party for Russell will be held at the Daybreak Hills Condominiums clubhouse (1320 W. 6690 S. West Jordan, UT 84123) between 5 and 9 PM on Friday, March 24th. Please park at the LDS church (just south of the clubhouse) located at 1380 W. 6785 S. West Jordan, UT 84084, and we will shuttle anyone who wants a ride over to the clubhouse.
