Rulon Paul Madsen, LTC, a true patriot, passed away on March 22, 2021.
He was born in Salt Lake City in the Sugarhouse area to Rulon King and Julia Evelyn Madsen on November 8,1928. He grew up in Frogtown in the Bingham Canyon and was proud to be a student in the old Bingham High School. He enjoyed meeting with his classmates once a month for lunch until recently. When his family moved to Sandy, he met Ramona Hardcastle at a church dance. Being ever the patriot, he dropped out of high school in order to join the Army during WWII, although the war ended while he was still sailing across the ocean toward occupied Japan. Upon returning home, he married Ramona in the Salt Lake Temple and attended the University of Utah on the GI Bill. Immediately after graduating in 1951, he was called back to serve in the Korean Police Action and then chose to make a career in the military. He was stationed in several places across the country as well as around the world. While his family moved with him, they always knew Sandy, UT was home and everyone has remained there to this day. He never took the freedoms he enjoyed for granted and he had deep and steadfast love of this country.
Following his retirement from the U.S. Army, he had a second career, working at the University of Utah. He and Ramona volunteered at Temple Square in Salt Lake for several years. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and was awarded the Silver Beaver. He became active with the Mormon Battalion Association, serving as National Commander for two terms. Following his retirement from the U of U, he became active with The Disabled American Veterans, serving on the Honor Guard and performing Military Honors for many retired veterans.
Paul's children would like to honor their mother for her unconditional love and dedication to our father. No one else could have taken care of him the way she has for the past 15 years. The family would also like to give a special thank you to all his caregivers over the years from Harmony Home Health & Hospice, through the VA, and Capitol Hill Senior Living. They all showed such love and respect to both Paul and Ramona.
Paul is survived by his wife of 73 years, Ramona Hardcastle Madsen, his children RoLayne (Brent) Fowler, Russell Paul (Kaye), Ranae (Harald) Olafsson, and Robyn (Alan) Gardner; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. We are certain that he has been greeted on the other side by his parents, Rulon King and Julia Evelyn Funk Madsen, as well as his brother John K. (Vivian) Madsen and sisters Kathryn (Marvin) Smullen and Ruth (Gerrold) Matson.
Funeral services were for immediate family members only. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you please wear U of U colors, fly your American flag, enjoy a Burger King Whopper and sip a Coke while watching a John Wayne movie to honor our hero.
