November 19, 1920 — June 5, 2019

Ross Willard Butterfield

Our remarkable dad, fun grandpa, devoted husband, brother and friend passed away peacefully on June 5, 2019 at the age of 98.  Ross was born on November 19, 1920 in Herriman, Utah to Willard Franklin and Bertha Jane Price Butterfield.  He was raised in Herriman and helped his father herd sheep when he was young.  His parents taught him to work hard and be responsible, respective, and honest.  Dad had a love for cars, so it was only fitting that he became a mechanic for Butterfield Motor for many years and then a car salesman, where he was trusted because of his integrity.  We called him "the only honest car salesman in the valley".

Ross graduated from Jordan High School.  He met the love of his life and his eternal companion, Marjorie Williams and they were married on November 29, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple.  They were blessed with two children, Dennis and Claudia before being drafted into the US Navy. He served with the Navy Seabees during World War II in Okinawa, Japan.  Ross loved his country and was proud to serve for our freedom.  He is a true patriot.  After his return from the war, they were blessed with five additional children:  Norman, Connie, Colette, Cindy, and Carleen.

Dad and Mom loved to dance, and they spent many years dancing in church dance festivals and Gold and Green Balls.  He could still manage a little jig at age 97!

Dad was a dedicated disciple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many callings with love and dependability.  He served as a Bishop, Stake President, and Service Missionary at the West Jordan Employment Center where he touched many lives and was an example of integrity, kindness and love to all.  Dad also served on the Board of Directors for Jordan Valley Hospital.

Dad loved people and enjoyed telling stories to anyone who would listen.  Family vacations at Fish Lake and Seven Mile were so fun and created memories that will last forever.

His dear wife, Marjorie passed away in December 1993. He was blessed to find companionship with a longtime friend, Laurel Nokes and they were married June 1, 1994. They just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

Ross is survived by his wife, Laurel, his children:  Dennis (Vicky), Claudia (John) Johnson, Norman (Pauline), Connie Boulton, Colette (Scott) Davis,

Cindy (Carl) Sorensen, Carleen (John) Chatwin. 27grandchildren, 70 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild.  Laurel's children:  Vernon (deceased) Tava Nokes, Loralee (Neils) Peterson, Kim (Brent) Ritzman, Kelly (Connie) Nokes.  22 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren, 3 great great children.  Sisters:  Carma Beckstead, Janus (Dell) Beckstead, brother:  Dee (Beth) Butterfield.

Preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, father and mother, sisters, Fay Elswood, Sylvia Wardell, Tamera Butterfield, great grandson, Brooks Butterfield and granddaughter, Kayden Fraughton.

We express our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Sunridge Assisted Living for their love, kindness, and care rendered to dad.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 10 at 12:00 noon at the Stake Center.  A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 10:45 to 11:45 am.  Interment will be in the Herriman Cemetery with Honor Guard by American Legion Post 112.
