Our sweet tender Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Son, Brother and Friend passed away from this life on the night of Friday, August 25th, 2023 at the age of 59. A life gone too soon.
Rory was born the second son of Dennis and Marie Payne on January 1st, 1964 in Tremonton, Utah. He spent his growing up years in Howell in Northern Utah and loved to say he was a simple farm boy. He attended Bear River High School in Tremonton and served an LDS Mission to Perth Australia from 1983-84. He married Lisa Anne O’Donnell on June 5th, 1985 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Rory and Lisa spent 4 years in Sugar House then moved to Sandy where they have lived for the past 34 years. The years after his mission and early married life kept him busy with education at LDS Business College and University of Phoenix. He graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Management with an emphasis in Business Administration. Many years were spent working at Deseret Research, DataChem Laboratories and Director of Facilities at Salt Lake County. He made many, many lifelong friends along the way with whom he kept in contact over the years.
He served many years in the Hillcrest Stake as a Bishopric Counselor, High Counselor, and Youth Leader. Some of the highlights of his church service were being a Bishop of the Hillcrest 7th Ward and ministering to those in need. Never forgetting his simple roots, he loved to help and serve others. He had a big heart and included everyone around him in his circle of love. He had a wonderful way with words and seemed to always say what was needed even when it might not have been what was wanted to be heard. He had a great love of President Abraham Lincoln and this great country. He read and remembered everything from this President.
His greatest treasure was his family, especially his 11 grandchildren who called him Papa and Grandpa. They were the highlight of his life and he was delighted to spend time with each of them at their activities and family get togethers. His faith was never shaken even in the rough patches of life. He absolutely had faith in and a testimony of the Living Savior. He shared that regularly with family and friends. He was always a strength to his family. Serving was what he was all about up until his last day on this earth.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years Lisa Payne, five children, Denise Dickens (Robert), Daniel Payne (Desarae), Austin Payne (Kelsee), Aubree Payne (Tyler) and Rey Payne. He also had 11 grandchildren, Carson, Sydni, Kayden, Riley, Lincoln and Micah Dickens, Leah, Madi and Aaron Payne, Everly and David Payne. He was preceded in death by his father Dennis William Payne, brother Rocky Dennis Payne and granddaughter Lexi Marie Dickens.
Viewings will be held on Tuesday, September 5th from 6:00-8:00 pm and Wednesday, September 6th from 9:30-10:45 am in the Sandy Hillcrest Stake Center on 8485 South 1000 East in Sandy, UT. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, September 6th at 11:00 am in the Sandy Hillcrest Stake. Interment at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 E. Bengal Blvd., Cottonwood Heights, UT.
