He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1965. While in high school he worked at the Cedar Falls Daily Record newspaper office. He then graduated from United Electronics Laboratory Institute in West Des Moines, Iowa with an Electronics Technology diploma in 1967.

As a result of this education, he went to work for General Dynamics (GD) in Fort Worth, Texas as an Electronics Technician. Two years later he was promoted to an engineering position and offered the opportunity to go back to school to get a degree in Electrical Engineering. His work moved him to Ogden Air Logistics Center based at Hill Air Force Base, where he met the love of his life, Janean Blanchard. They were married November 5th, 1977. Roger went on to graduate from Weber State College in 1980, Magna Cum Laude, with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics.
