Robert H. Ross

In accordance with his wishes, we announce with joy and celebration the new birth of Robert Hugh Ross, 94, on Sep. 3, 2019, in Sandy, UT, of causes incident to old age. Mr. Ross was born in Bartley, Nebr., to Hugh E. Ross and Winifred Mae Shears on Nov. 4, 1924. In 1942, Robert joined the Army Air Corps and became a P-51 Mustang pilot. On May 12, 1945, he married Mary Carolin Hunsaker of Mesa, Ariz., in Venice, Fla. Then he received orders to report to the European theater of WWII on Aug. 14, 1945. Mr. Ross's version of the war submits that the Japanese heard he was entering the war, so they decided to surrender on Aug. 14.

After military service, Robert earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado and worked as a sales and design engineer for aluminum heat treating furnaces for most of his career.

Mr. Ross joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1954. He enjoyed serving in callings too numerous to mention, but predominantly in leadership and teaching. Robert served as a sealer in the Washington, D.C., Toronto, and Jordan River temples for more than twenty-five years. Since the mid-1960s, Mr. Ross has spent most of his discretionary time in family history research, compiling some 33,500 relatives.

Mr. Ross is predeceased by his wife Carolin (2015), three grandchildren and one great grandchild. His survivors include son Nick (Marcelle) of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; daughter Shelley Ashcroft (Robert) of Sandy, UT; and son John of Sandy, UT, along with nine grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
