Robert Kenneth “Kenny” Atkinson Sr. passed away at his home in Sandy, Utah on February 2, 2023. He was born January 30, 1925, in Charleston, West Virginia to Robert Nelson Atkinson and Hallie Veda Cummings. He loved growing up in West Virginia, spending time with his parents and sisters Arbutus and Jean, and brother David “Buddy” Atkinson. Kenny served in the US Army at the end of WWII helping with rebuilding efforts in Germany.
He married his college sweetheart, Julia Bell “Peggy” Donnally on January 2, 1948. They later traveled to the Salt Lake LDS temple to be sealed together with their children. They spent 62 wonderful years together and enjoyed serving three LDS service missions in Lawrence, Kansas and Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Kenny was a faithful member of the LDS church and held numerous callings and loved serving others. Kenny held a number of jobs, but spent the majority of his career driving trucks for Consolidated Freightway. He received the 2-million-mile safety award and was proud of his excellent driving record. After retiring he later went back to train and mentor new truck drivers. He had a joyful heart and was always telling jokes in order to get people to smile. His favorite title was “Grandpa.”
Preceded in death by his wife Peggy, daughter Janet Atkinson and daughter-in-law Sally Atkinson.
Survived by children Robert Atkinson; Julia (Ralph) Menssen; Melinda (Rick) Cowin; Sherry (Craig) Perry; 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. God be with you ‘til we meet again.
Funeral services will be held Friday Feb. 10, 2023 at the LDS church at 8485 S 1000 E at 11am. A viewing will be held prior from 10-11am. Interment, Utah Veterans Memorial Park.
