The last surviving child of Sylvia Godfrey and John Keep Maynes has been called home. Hopefully the joy of being reunited with his loved ones outweighs the little disappointment of not living to be 100. Richard Lee Maynes was born March 31, 1928 in the Old Home in Murray, Utah.
In his 95 years he has been witness to millions of inventions, many wars, miraculous medical advances and space exploration. He graduated from Murray High School in 1947. While in High School he loved basketball, skiing and running track. Richard is a Veteran and Purple Heart recipient from the Korean War in 1950-52.
He married Joycelyn B. Day in 1953, their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Richard and Joycelyn raised their family in Murray and Draper, UT and Rathdrum, Idaho. He and Joycelyn served in the Nauvoo Restoration Mission in 1994 and 1995. Richard was an active member of the Riverton Utah 1st Ward and the Quartzsite Branch in Arizona. He enjoyed being in the temple. His wife of 53 years, Joycelyn, died in 2006. Richard married Norma Lea Day in 2009. They have enjoyed 15 years together.
Richard’s work ethic was very important to him. Dad’s talents were in brick and stone masonry, being a farmer and gardener. He loved being in his big garden and sharing the fruits of his labors with his neighbors and friends. He boasted about his great dancing skills, enjoyed fishing trips to Alaska and traveling across the US to historic sites.
Richard is survived by his wife Norma, children: Marc (Deborah), Chad (Helen), Douglas (Debra), Scott (Caryn), Tamra Duval (Shane), Arlynne Landeen (Steven), Eric (Rhonda), Cherise Felker (David), son in law Philip Green, sisters in law Carol Maynes and Norma Maynes, 30 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren with two more on the way, Norma’s children: Deb Gerber, Steven Day (Shelley), Mike Day (Lori).
Predeceased by wife Joycelyn, daughter Elissa, parents Sylvia and John, siblings Harry, Roy, John, Gem and Glen, grandson Travis Landeen.
