Richard Ross Herron
Richard Ross "Dick" Herron passed from this life on January 10, 2018 in Highland, Utah. He was born on January 27, 1931, to Elmer W. Herron and Margaret Alice Bates in Tooele, Utah. He was the eighth of ten children.
Dick loved life as a child on the ranch in Erda, Utah. He told stories of the family, friends, horses and adventures. He was proud of his family's pioneer heritage in the area. He graduated from Tooele High School in 1950, then served in the US Air Force for four years.
After discharge from the Air Force, Dick moved to Southern California to build homes with his brother Alec. While working there, he met Carolyn Walter at a Church activity.
On December 28, 1959, he and Carolyn were married in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with three children, Richard Ross Herron, Jr. (Kara), Cynthia Herron Glad (Kirby), and Rebecca Herron Bird (Robert). Their first child (known as Rick) was born in Whittier, California, then in 1963 they moved back to Utah to raise their children close to family.
He loved his family. He and Carolyn now have thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Grandchildren include Grant Herron (Kayla), Michael Herron (Rachael), Alexander Herron (McKayla), Matthew Herron, Marcie Glad, Jordan Glad (Kristian), Taylor Glad, Sarah Glad, Jacqueline Bird Abbott (Brendan), Gregory Bird (Rebecca), Corinne Bird, Claire Bird, and Mark Bird. Great-grandchildren include Ethan Abbott, Calvin Abbott, and Milo Herron.
He took great pride in crafting high-quality homes and other buildings. He worked all over the Salt Lake Valley and in some other areas in Utah. He built homes for his own family first in Granger, and later in West Jordan, Utah. He built many small homes as well as others featured in the Salt Lake Parade of Homes. His son and many of his nephews were employed by him at various times. He also helped with several construction projects in service to his family and neighbors.
In his later life, he enjoyed his fruit trees and garden and liked watching Western movies.
He was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He raised children with firm testimonies of the gospel.
He is survived by his wife; three children; brother, Ned (Mary) Herron; brother-in-law, Floyd Moon (Sally, deceased); thirteen grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
The family wishes to give special thanks to those caregivers at Highland Glen Senior Living who helped Dick at the end of his time here on earth.
Viewing-Sunday, January 14, 2018, 6 to 8 p.m. at Goff Mortuary, 8090 South State Street in Midvale, Utah. Funeral-Monday, January 15, 2018, noon, with a viewing at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS chapel at the corner of 2700 West 7000 South, West Jordan, Utah. Interment will take place immediately after the funeral at Valley View Memorial Park at 4391 West 4100 South, West Valley City, Utah.
The family requests no flowers. Instead, please give to a charity of your choice.
