Renee Hannah Smith

Renee Hannah Smith suddenly and quietly passed from this life at the age of 73 on September 25th, 2024 at Maple Ridge Nursing facility in Salt Lake City, Utah. What a celebration there was in Heaven when she was greeted there by her parents DeVar Bennett Smith and Muriel Hannah James Smith; and by her sisters Doris Butler, Carol White, Marilyn Smith, and sister-in-law Mary Rogers Smith.

Renee is survived by her brothers DeVar Ivan Smith (Gaylen) of Lehi, Utah, David Bennett Smith of Mona, Utah; and brother-in-law Delbert Butler of Marsing, Idaho. Renee also leaves behind 24 beloved nieces and nephews whom she has served, played with, taught, and helped with crafts/projects as they were growing up – and some of their many children.

Renee was born in Boise, Idaho on July 8th, 1951. Her early schooling was in Kuna, Idaho until the family farm was sold as she was becoming a teen. Then she attended schools in Sandy, Park City and Heber City, Utah, before graduating from high school in Gilbert, Arizona. The family moved back to Utah and Renee was called to serve a mission in Tempe, Arizona for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After her mission, she attended classes at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, then went to Salt Lake Community College intending to become a medical assistant/nurse. She loved holding newborn babies in the hospital nursery.

An illness developed that put limits on what she could do. She began working as a server at McDonalds and enjoyed that for some time. She made the best of what she was given to her by life. She was a light to many around her.

Renee loved genealogy; finding and gathering much information and sharing it with family. She loved going to the temple. She loved poetry and writing it as well as writing her own life stories. She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles. In later life she crocheted many items to give away. She had a gentle, generous, and giving heart.

The family thanks the staff at Maple Ridge Nursing in Salt Lake where Renee was given loving care her last year of life. Thanks also to Wes who has been her best friend for so long.
