Reed B. McCune passed away on Monday, October 9, 2017 at home surrounded by family after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer. He is our "Gentle Giant." He thought of others more than self to the end. He was a kind, loyal, patient, steady source of strength and stability. He was a constant pillar of love and support. He taught by example rather than words and had a keen sense of humor that kept us smiling.
Reed was born in St. George, Utah, on November 24, 1938. He is the son of Byron Broadhead McCune and Alice Christena Hendrickson McCune. Reed and Kathleen Lunt McCune have been married sweethearts for 44 years and together they raised their family, traveled, and built a beautiful life. Reed, with Kathie, served two service missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Reed retired after nearly 50 years at Cummins Intermountain where he was a man that cared more about the work than the title and was a mentor and friend to many of his peers.
Reed is the beloved father of Darrell Reed McCune (Lisa), Kathy Faust (Chap), Sandra Workman (Randy), and beloved step-father of Keith Sargent (Brenda), Pauline Sargent Isbell (John), and LaRayne Sargent Miller (Stanton). He is the revered grandfather of 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Reed is a lifetime "Runnin' Ute" season ticket holder for the University of Utah basketball team. He was a "Utah Man Sir" who loved his team and loved sharing time with his family at the games. To the end Reed was an example of kindness, patience, courage, humility, meekness, and charity. The family would like to thank all the loving caregivers from Treasured Moments Home Care and Tender Care Hospice who respectfully and consistently cared for our dear father and husband.
