Ray passed away on March 10, 2016. He was born in Detroit, MI on December 24, 1932 to Lee and Edna Shuman. They later moved to West Virginia where they made many memories. He married Genalee May Freeman in Moatsville, WV on May 15, 1952. He and his wife joined the LDS church in West Virginia and in 1960 moved their family of six to Salt Lake City, Utah where they had two more children. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on Feb. 15, 1961. Ray and Genalee were married for 52 years before she passed away in August of 2004. He longed for her companionship since and has now been reunited with the love of his life. If there was ever a lesson to be learned from Ray and Genalee, it was their total devotion to one another.
Ray took great pride in his country and proudly served in the military. He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was a recipient of the Silver Star. He also served in the Utah State Guard. While he didn't talk much about his service in the war, it made a great impact on him and shaped him into the man he was.
He was a man of many talents and it showed through his work and service to the community. He had a Master's Degree in Social Work. He was a Sheriff's Deputy and also worked at the Utah State Prison.
Ray and Genalee had a love for the Gospel and served in many capacities in the church. They served as missionaries in the Inner City Mission as well as Substance Abuse Missionaries. Together they served as temple workers at the Jordan River Temple. Ray was a member of the Mormon Battalion and also served a mission at the Church Employment Center. He loved the people he served and those he served with.
Ray is survived by three of his children: Naomi (John), Terrie, and Ray Jr. (Margaret). He is also survived by his sister, Betty Morris (Ralph) and 25 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and children Mike, Tammy, and Debbie and three great-grandchildren.
