Ramona Nelson

June 13, 1934 — December 28, 2019

Ramona Nelson

Our loving mother, Ramona Gutierrez Nelson, 85, was born on June 13, 1934, in Petaca, Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. Upon the early death of her mother, Carlotta Gutierrez, Ramona and her 2 brothers and 3 sisters were raised by their grandparents, Luciano and Rebecca Gutierrez. On the morning of December 28, 2019, surrounded by her earthly family, Ramona peacefully reunited with loved ones who went on before, and who she longed to see again.

We will miss her spicy personality, unconditional love and zest for life. Ramona enjoyed coffee, showing and sharing her jewelry, and music-especially her Mexican songs and Andrea Bocelli, who she was thrilled to see in person a few years ago. She loved visiting with and feeding her family. No one ever left her house hungry. She was always hospitable, forgiving, and caring. She helped care for all of her grandchildren who loved and respected their Grandma Mona.

Ramona leaves behind four children: Martha (Ben) Reyes, Edward (Jo Lynne) Lucero, Joanna Andujo, and Sadie (Johnny) Reyes. As a grandmother, Ramona helped raise 18 children who are better adults because of her influence. She had 30 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren. Her sister, Carlotta, many nieces, nephews and friends will miss her.

Ramona was preceded in death by ex-husbands, Eduardo Lucero and Guadalupe Santana. She was also married briefly to Jim Nelson. Ramona deeply mourned the passing of her son, Carl Raymond Lucero, daughter, Prescilla Mascarenas, son-in-law Jonathan Shea Martinez, grandson Larry Mascarenas, granddaughter Vanessa Reyes, and great-granddaughter Shelby Love Balsamini.

The family would like to thank Country Lane Assisted Living and Draper Rehabilitation Center where she was treated with great kindness and care by Ilisa, Pam, Amanda, and so many others too numerous to mention. Hospice was also amazing.

Join us for a celebration of Ramona's life on Saturday, January 11, from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm at the First Ward, 308 West 7500 South, Midvale, Utah.
