Paul Condie

Husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Paul Condie, 81, passed away at home, November 9, 2017. His loving wife Pat was at his side. Paul was born at home in Midvale, Utah, January 4, 1936, to Ellsworth and Mary Price Condie, their fifth child. His mother did not recover from the childbirth; she died from complications when Paul was just six days old. His father was not prepared to handle the needs of a newborn and the demands of caring, alone, for the four older children. So for much of his childhood Paul was raised by Mary's sister Ether (Clarence) Allen, and later by another sister Florence (Verald) Lamb. He was 14 before he returned to live full time with his father (re-married, Erma Nelson plus 5 children) and the older siblings that were still at home. He stayed close to the Allen, Lamb and Nelson families all of his days.

Paul graduated from Jordan High School in 1954 and looked to military enlistment as a next step. But he wasn't accepted, because all 5 foot 4 inches of him failed to meet the Army's 110 pound minimum weight requirement. He did eventually serve for several years in the Utah National Guard.

After waiting patiently for her to turn 18, Paul married Gay Rasmussen, March 15, 1957, in the Salt Lake Temple. Employment and providing for the family were not always easy, as the young couple welcomed 3 daughters (Kelly, Michelle and Laurie) and a son (Kevon) into the world. Paul was always a worker, frequently holding down two full time jobs in his role as provider. He was a competent auto mechanic with a well-equipped garage, often the only reason that members of the family had a working car. Two different times the family moved to Wendover, Utah, for work. They eventually settled in Sandy, where Paul began his 28 years with Kennecott. Gay died unexpectedly from leukemia June 21, 1976, leaving a still-young father with a broken heart, and 4 children, at home, without their mother.

Even after an appropriate period of mourning, Paul didn't want to complicate his life or the lives of the children. He swore off dating for many years, before ultimately meeting and marrying Patricia Milne, May 4, 1985. She brought her own 5 (adult) children into the newly combined family. With a twinkle in his eye Paul said he married Pat "because she was gainfully employed." But they had found true affection, which deepened across the 32 years they lived and loved together.

The complications of the family situation in his youth, made worse by the unexpected loss of Gay, left Paul with a sadness and grief that endured for many years, and from which he sought to escape. Yet somehow he found a turning point, obtained help, and climbed back up through force of will. When Pat came into his life, she became his companion and helpmeet for a journey that added love and joy to the willpower which had brought him back. They were sealed in the Jordan River Temple, March 14, 2015. Pat cared for Paul with love and devotion through many years of complicated health issues, and held his hand, whispering quiet reassurances, during his final hours.

Grandpa Paul was a kind, giving man, with a wonderful smile and gentle, good humor. He loved the grandchildren and great grandchildren, and they loved him, easily and completely. Paul would understand that the love of family and friends is the highest of honors.

Paul is survived by Pat, his wife, and his sister Maxine (Glade) Christensen. He always felt a special bond of gratitude to the the Allen, Lamb and Nelson families. The 9 children are Kelly (Michael) Thompson, Michelle (Gill) Cowling, Laurie (Scott) Maurer, Kevon Condie, Jim (Cheryl) Price, Chris (Craig) Noorlander, Mike (Pam) Price, Diane-pre-deceased (John, now married to Christian) Kiser and Art (Velina) Price. There are 30 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren who will also miss Paul. But only for a while. We look forward in faith, to a future reunion, in a better place.
