Nena Nystrom

Nena Nystrom, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on October 25, 2015. The daughter of Albert and Edna Job Nielson, she was born on June 29, 1934 in the small farming community of Grand View, Utah. The farm took root in her heart, for she had a lifelong love of open spaces, a strong work ethic, and a green thumb. She loved early mornings, cooking, gardening, children, flowers, birds, and pine nut hunting in the fall.

She went on her first date with Al Nystrom on Christmas Day 1950. They saw "The Red Shoes" and had Chinese food. By spring, they had exchanged school rings and were going steady. Their favorite date was to go dancing at Saltair when the big bands were playing. They were married on December 9, 1953 and shared 62 years of love and devotion. When Nena was challenged with poor health during her old age, her sweetheart Al became her caregiver, never leaving her side.

Nena was a devoted mother. For her, love was comprised of daily acts of kindness. She would greet her children after school with homemade cookies and always took the time to talk to them about their day. In later years, her children knew they could come to her with broken hearts and dreams, for her love was unconditional and she was always there to provide solace and advice. She could answer every question, from the best time of year to plant tomatoes, to how to thicken a gravy, to the names and stories contained in an old family photo. Her home and heart were open to her friends, neighbors, nieces and nephews, and anyone in need.

Nena was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ginger, and baby girl Linda. She is survived by her devoted husband Al, her children Dave (Kaye), Jill, Jan (Mike), grandchildren Shane (Andrea), Daniel, Savannah, Bryce, and Nena, great granddaughter Carlee, and dog Dossi. A private graveside service was held on October 30, 2015. Her memory can be honored with an act of kindness, for she had a gracious spirit and will be remembered by all who knew her for her loving, compassionate nature.
