Monte Carrol Scoville

Devoted husband and lifelong teacher, Monte Carrol Scoville, 87, passed away unexpectedly on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 30, 2017. He is survived by his wife Zora LaRay Scoville, daughter Carol Ann (Kent) Steedman and son Monte Alan (Alyson) Scoville, a previously adopted daughter Robyn J. Anderson, and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Earl Hurst and Blanche Fisher Scoville, five sisters and one brother, and a former wife Barbara P. (Keith) Worthington.

The youngest of eight children, Monte was born on December 25, 1929 in Raymond, Alberta, Canada into a deeply religious LDS home. His siblings were Lenore (McNaughton), Wyora (Pilling), Ellsworth, Leatrice Joy (Tucker), Keith, Elaine (Goodrich) and Estelle (Wardle). His father passed away when he was only 7 years old from a work-related accident at the local sugar factory, however, Monte always admired him for serving a full-time LDS mission and later as a ward missionary. Monte's mother was very influential in his life. She encouraged him to sing at a young age, and music class was Monte's favorite subject in his grade school years. She also passed away before his 21st birthday.

His family moved to the city of Calgary when he was 12 and he became deeply involved in scouts. After the family moved to Salt Lake City, Monte later fulfilled an LDS mission in the Manawatu District of New Zealand and served in the U.S. Army. He received a bachelor's degree in teaching at Brigham Young University. He worked as a speech teacher of eighth and ninth grade students at Kearns Junior High School as well as a regarded position as the Seminary Principal. He was a former Bishop in Kearns. In 1966, he completed a master's degree in religious education from BYU and began teaching seminary and institute. In spite of struggling with mental health, Monte served throughout his life valiantly as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Years later, Monte married Zora LaRay Kay and relocated to South Salt Lake, where he lived for the rest of his life. A prolific journal writer and romantic, Monte wrote a poem for Zora every day. In 1989, he was a local manager of a vending machine service that donated a portion of their profits to fight the war on drugs. His last church calling was serving in the Branch Presidency for the Joahanna-Case Branch that is comprised of two care centers in the South Salt Lake Stake.

Funeral services will be held at the Southgate Ward LDS Chapel, 2702 S. Main Street, South Salt Lake, Utah 84115 on Wednesday, June 7. A viewing and family prayer will be held at 10 a.m., and the funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Camp Williams Cemetery.
