Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend, Milton Thompson Harmon, 88, passed away January 30, 2024, in Provo, Utah.
Born July 10, 1935, in Manti, Utah to Milton Lowery and Ida Mae Thompson Harmon. Married Betty Sue Cook, June 27,1959 in the Manti LDS Temple.
Milton attended schools in Manti and Nephi, Utah, graduating from Juab High School in 1953. He served an LDS mission in the Gulf States from 1954-1956. After returning home, he attended the University of Utah College of Law in Salt Lake City graduating with a Juris Doctor Degree in 1962. He was affiliated with the Sigma Pi fraternity. While attending Law School he received the Wallstreet Journal Outstanding Student Award in Corporate Law.
Graduating from law school in June 1962, Milt and Sue made their home in Nephi and he began working with his father managing the Nephi Poultry Plant. After the plant closed, he was elected as the Juab County Attorney where he served for 15 years. During this time, he also served on the Nephi city council from 1986-1998. In 2001 he began serving as the Juab County Public Defender. He served here until he retired in 2016.
Milton had many hobbies and outside interests. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and an accomplished airplane pilot, receiving his pilot’s license at the age of 18. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren and working in his yard.
Milton was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served faithfully in many callings including Bishop of the Nephi 1st Ward, Young Men’s Leader, Scouting and Gospel Doctrine teacher. His love of the Savior and the gospel reflected in each of these callings.
Milton is survived by his loving wife Sue of 64 years; children M. Christopher (Lori) Harmon, South Jordan, UT, Maria (Don) Johnson, Medford OR., James, Idaho Falls, ID., and Ben (Cory) Harmon, Mapleton, UT. Eight grandchildren; Heather (Devin) Wills, Scott (Tiffany) Harmon, Jessica, Kholby, Tyler, Kailee, Luke and Crew Harmon and seven great grandchildren; Marlie, Garrett, Liam, Zoey and Caelan Wills, Nash and Knox Harmon, brother, Bryant (Susan) Harmon, sisters Gaydene (Roger) Jorgensen, Deborah Harmon, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 9, 2024, at the LDS Nephi 1st Ward, 222 South 100 E, Nephi at 11:30 a.m. Public viewing Thursday, 6-8 p.m. at the Anderson Mortuary in Nephi. Due to Sue’s health a family viewing will be held Friday, 10:30-11:15 a.m. at the LDS Chapel. Burial, Vine Bluff Cemetery, Nephi, UT.
The family wishes to express special thanks to the Drs. and nursing staff at Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi and Utah Valley Medical Center in Provo. They would also like to thank the Nephi City first responders for their care.
