Our tall (6’6”), kindly British gentleman, Melvin George Redgers, passed away from this earthly life on August 19, 2023 in Springville, Utah. He was born in London, England on July 14, 1934, the only child to Joseph Melvin Redgers and Annie Jane Beaumont Redgers. The family moved to Australia for employment when Melvin was two years old. Melvin grew up and went to school in Australia, and spent much of his youth working sheep at a Depot Ranch in central Australia. Melvin served in the Australian military for over two years in the Korean War. He was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and baptized at the age of 18. Melvin immigrated to the United States alone in 1958 at the age of 23. He served a mission for the church in London, England. He was sealed to Dona Verlene Oldroyd in the Salt Lake Temple on September 11, 1968. They were married for 45 years until her passing on September 4, 2013.
Melvin earned a degree in Math in Australia before moving to Utah. He also earned a degree in physics from the University of Utah. Mel worked for Salt Lake City Airport Number Two until his retirement.
Melvin and Dona lived a life of service and charity. They served in the Jordan River Temple for many years, were service missionaries at Deseret Industries, and served in many, many callings in the church. He had a strong testimony of his Savior, Jesus Christ. Melvin and Dona gave financial support to several missionaries and also to several youth for their educations. They were strong supporters of the University of Utah.
Mel loved gardening and shared the abundance with friends and neighbors, handing out tomatoes to any takers. He and Dona also liked to travel and they shared many parts of the world together. Mel loved education and learning, sports (he was a professional football/soccer player in Australia in his youth), and music.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dona, and brothers and sisters in-law: Florine and Jack Strang, Heber and Jennie Winget, Clayton and Wanda Fike, Roland and Faye Oldroyd, Berdean and Elsa Oldroyd, Leon Oldroyd, and Klar Oldroyd. He is survived by sister-in-law Barbara Oldroyd, and many nephews and nieces and their children.
The family would like to thank the staff of Spring Gardens in Mapleton, Utah and Heritage Gardens in Springville for the kindness and care they showed Mel in his last year, especially his hospice nurse, Jenny Mayo, who treated Mel like family.
A viewing for Melvin will be held at Goff Mortuary located at 8090 South State Street, Midvale, Utah from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday evening, August 25, 2023. Burial and graveside service will be held Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 11:00 at the Glenwood Cemetery.
