Marva Sorenson

Marva Naylor Sorenson, 90, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2016 in Draper, Utah.

Marva was born fifteen minutes before her twin sister, Melva, on June 21, 1926, to Robert and Bertha Naylor in Murray, Utah. They were the first children in the family to be born in the hospital. With the birth of the twins, their mother had six children under the age of eight. Marva grew up on the family farm in South Jordan, Utah. She worked hard milking cows and thinning sugar beets.

Marva graduated from Jordan High School in 1944 and went to work at the Naval Depot in Clearfield, Utah with her twin sister. Marva worked hard during this time to save up enough money to attend college. She attended Brigham Young University and graduated with a degree in Education. While at BYU, Marva met the love of her life, Deal Sorenson. On July 2, 1948, they were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and they made their home in South Jordan, Utah.

Marva began her career as a second grade teacher at Crescent Elementary School in Sandy, Utah. She taught second grade at several schools for the Jordan School District for over 30 years and retired from Crescent Elementary School in 1995.

In 1966 she fulfilled her dream of becoming a mother welcoming her son Dennis Deal and in 1969, her daughter Debra.  Marva was a wonderful mother and no two children could have had a better mother.  She was a teacher to many and spent countless hours teaching both of her children to read and write before they started school and later her grandchildren how to write cursive, "speed read," and write essays. She would give them a nickel for every page they completed.

Marva was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions in the wards that she attended.

Marva is survived by her children Dennis (Jen) Sorenson, Debra (Tim) Ma; grandchildren Brittany, Michaela (Rheo), Ashley (Jordan), Ali, Skylar, Paige, Madi, Carter, Sam, and Grace; and great-grandchildren Rielly, Remington, Estella, and soon to arrive baby Lucy; Sisters, Joan (Jim) Roberts and Fran Applegate; sister-in-law, Wanda Naylor; brother-in-law, Neldon Conder.
Preceded in death by her husband, Deal; grandson, Austin; parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dell (Jeanette) Naylor, David (Lillian) Naylor, and Roy Naylor; sisters and brothers-in-law, Farrell (John) Clayton, Melva (Gene) Prior, RaNae Conder.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 4 at 11:00 a.m. at Goff Mortuary on 8090 South State Street in Midvale, Utah. Viewings will be held at Goff Mortuary on Thursday, November 3 from 6-8 p.m. and 1 hour prior to the service on Friday. Interment at the West Jordan City Cemetery.
