Surrounded by loved ones, our precious mother, wife, grandmother, sister and friend, Martha Joen Higby Collins, 77, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2017 in West Jordan, Utah. She was born August 21, 1939 to Roy William Higby and Mary Ellen Thomas in Shelly, Idaho. The third of five children, she grew up in small towns and farming communities in Southeast Idaho.
Martha went to Pocatello High School then married Donald Kline in 1956. They had four children. She later divorced and, in 1964, married the love of her life, LeRoy Collins. Together they had another son. She was a deeply dedicated wife and mother, and spent her life in the service of others.
As a member of the LDS Church, Martha was a person of strong faith. She was a genuine friend to all and especially loved and served her children and grandchildren, several of whom she raised. Martha was known for her humble nature, warm smile, tender heart, hard work, brilliant mind, and many talents, including gardening, crocheting and cooking. She loved traveling, camping, fishing, reading, and spending time with her family. Martha's professional career took her to EIMCO for several years and later to NACM Intermountain, where she coordinated conferences, managed credit education, and served as a liaison for scores of members. She retired from NACM in 2004.
In early 2010, Martha began a 7-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was never heard to complain or dwell on her circumstances, always looking outside herself and showing concern and love to others.
Martha is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, LeRoy Collins; children, Deborah Rogerson, Carrie Larsen, Milton Kline, Adele Hagen and Roy (Tonya) Collins; brothers, Wynn Higby and Jimmie Higby; 16 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Don Higby and DeVon Higby.
A viewing will be held Monday, January 23 at 10:00 a.m. at the Westbrook Ward, 6500 S. Dixie Dr., West Jordan, with funeral services at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Elysian Gardens Cemetery.
