Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend, Martha (Martie) Ann Smoot Chidsey, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2015, in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the result of a fall.
She was born on January 10, 1929, in Washington D.C. to Martha and Ernest Smoot, the youngest of three children. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1947 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from St. Lawrence University in 1951. She married Thomas C. Chidsey at Saint Albans Church that same year, and together they raised three children as well as ten dogs and four cats over the years. Martie was devoted to her children and husband, had a sophisticated charm and wry sense of humor, cherished the company of many friends, loved music, was an accomplished artist (also a member of the Arts Club of Washington), and remained an avid Redskins fan.
She returned to college in her mid-40s to earn a Master of Arts degree in theater from American University in 1977; her thesis was titled "The West Street Theatre, Annapolis, Maryland: 1771-1774." Martie traveled to Italy over 15 times where she studied art history in Florence and learned to sculpt in Pietra Santa. She retired in 1988 from the Montgomery County Department of Recreation where she was supervisor for visual arts, public art and dance programs, and concerts.
Martie is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Tom, best friend and daughter Martha, brother Ernest, and her parents. She is survived by sons Tom Jr. (Mary) of Sandy, Utah, and Steve (Sharon) of Ashland, Virginia; son-in-law Jeff Valler (Lianne) of McCordsville, Indiana; sister Allie of Springfield, Virginia; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at a later date at Saint Paul's Parrish Kent in Kent County, Maryland.
