Marilyn Shelton

December 29, 1930 — February 22, 2021

Marilyn Shelton

Our precious Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Friend passed away on February 22, 2021.  Her final days were spent at her home in West Jordan, Utah, surrounded by her family.
Marilyn (90) was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 29 1930.  She was the daughter of Harold Johannes and Helen Anna Sanders Madsen, the fourth of their eight children.  Her early years were spent in the Avenues area of Salt Lake City.  She loved playing on the lion statues at the State Capitol Building and referred to them as, "my lions".  Later she moved with her parents to a new home in the Union area.  There she developed a love for animals, particularly dogs and horses.  Her love for animals continued her entire life.  As an adult she bred, raised and showed Lhasa Apso dogs for a time.
Mom had a deep and abiding faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and in His Restored Gospel.  Her testimony was evident in every aspect of her life.  She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  Her gospel service started as a young woman when she served as a full-time missionary in the Southwest Indian Mission making life-long friends.  Following her mission, fell in love with, and married our father, Donald Leland Shelton.  They were married on St. Valentine's Day, February 14th, 1957 in the Salt Lake Temple.  Later in life, the two of them served a full-time mission together in the England Leeds Mission.  Her love for those she served, again led to more treasured friends.  She served faithfully in all her assignments, and had a special gift for teaching the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The marriage of our parents began a life of love, joy, service, and adventure.  Together they had five children.  We enjoyed many fun vacations and camping trips together.  Mom loved the deserts of the Southwest.  There were fun times at Lake Powell, Capitol Reef National Park, Zions National Park, and Bryce National Park.  Many long hours were spent rockhounding or looking for just the right piece of weathered wood.  She also loved camping and fishing at Fish Lake and Christmas Meadows in the High Uintas, days on the California beaches, and exploring the Redwoods.  There was no rock shop on Highway 89 that she had not explored thoroughly.
Mom was an artist.  Her art showed up in the form of elegant floral arrangements, dried flower arrangements, sculptures, paintings, and intricate quilts for her children and grandchildren.  She had a floral business and provided backdrops and beautiful floral arrangements for many weddings, including those of her children.  Serving food was her love language.  She was an extraordinary cook and baker and always wanted you to, "have some more."  Her Parker House dinner rolls were well known and highly sought after, and her Sunday pot roasts were a weekly delight.  We all loved to join in when she would dance a jig or two in the kitchen.
We have faith in the atonement of Jesus Christ, in life after this life, and in the sweet reunion she is having with loved ones who preceded her in death. Yes, we are sad for ourselves but we are mostly happy for her.  She was and is an elect lady who led a life that has now become a legacy for us to follow. Anything good we have achieved in our lives can be traced back to her sweet and powerful influence on us. We love you Mom.
She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, great grandson Collin, brothers Harold S. Madsen (Mona); Kenneth C. Madsen (Ruth); Evan L. Madsen. Sisters Janet Madsen Lemon and Mary Lou Peterson (Leroy), and Brother-in-law, Eldon Kent Harward.
She is Survived by her five children; Donald (Robyn), Sherri Walton (Kyle); Dianne Middaugh (Craig); David; Kent (Jenni); 23 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. Sisters; Winifred (Harward) Stay (Bill); Miriam Chapin (Rod), Sister-in-law, Darlene Madsen Harper; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 27th at 11:00 am, with a viewing from 9:00 am-10:45 am at the Welby 9th ward building, 8841 South 4800 West, West Jordan, Utah 84088
