Marilyn Macfarlane

Our beloved, sweet, loving mom Marilyn Petty Macfarlane passed away peacefully November 21, 2018, having lived a full and gratifying life. Marilyn was born August 26, 1927, in Nephi, Utah to Bryan J and Gladys (Garrett) Petty.

At the age of two, her family moved to Cedar City where she attended elementary and junior high school. Her sophomore year the family moved to Provo where she attended and graduated from Provo High School. After high school she attended BYU where she graduated in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in Physical Education and Health. While at BYU she participated in various intramural sports and clubs. She was the president of the ski club and was one of it's top skiers.

She married the love of her life M James (Jim) Macfarlane August 16, 1949, in the Salt Lake Temple. She was an active member of the LDS Church living in the Midvale 7th Ward. Marilyn enjoyed serving in all the auxiliaries of the church and had been a faithful temple worker.

She taught school in the Jordan School District for over 20 years. Her many years of teaching included physical education, Title I, and first grade. Marilyn had many hobbies. She particularly enjoyed sewing, reading, and traveling. She, her sister Marge and their friends started a book club that met monthly for over 50 years. She truly enjoyed traveling with her sister Marge, brother-in-law Les, and friend Melba. But her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Every Friday her grandchildren would gather at "Grandma Mac's" house for "Grandma Fridays." The grandchildren cherish those wonderful memories.

Marilyn is survived by two sons and three daughters: Sheri Utley (Chris), Geri Fernley, John Macfarlane (Lila), Jan Woolf, and Jeff Macfarlane (Michael Crittenden). She loved and adored her 8 grandchildren (Heather, Jenesee, Jordan, Bryan, Brett, Alex, Lyle, Lindsey) and 10 great grandchildren. Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents, and her beloved sister, Marge.

Services will be held 11:00 am Saturday, December 1, 2018, at the Midvale 7th Ward Chapel, 8350 South Jackson Street, Midvale.
