Margaret Kay Christensen

Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and dearest of friends departed this earth life as she was in the midst of preparing for what she most looked forward to, Christmas with her children and grandchildren who gathered at her home every year. And there is no place they would rather be, for Kay embodied the Spirit of Christmas every day of the year with her biggest of all hearts, enveloping warmth, limitless generosity, joyous light, and unwavering love. Her greatest happiness was in giving and the greatest of all her gifts was herself. In her presence you were everything. Her keen intellect and wise judgment enriched us all and were sought by many throughout her career in politics and government. She was first drawn to public service volunteering with the presidential campaign of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who inspired many with the words, "Few will have greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation." She took those words to heart and her influence for good rippled through her many years of public service as she subsequently served as the Utah campaign coordinator for former President Jimmy Carter, earned her Juris Doctor degree, worked as Chief of Staff for Congressman Wayne Owens and as the Deputy Mayor of Salt Lake City.

While mobility issues shrank her world the last years of her life, her active mind, vibrant spirit, reach of influence, and paramount concern for others did not. Her door was always open to visitors and phone kept busy. So often we have heard and thought ourselves, "What will we do without her?" Yet she remains, our roots, our compass, our home. Our only solace is in the thought of her free spirit wrapped in the loving embrace of her dear parents, Merlin and Lyal Ashman, her grandparents, Charles and Margaret Nelson, her brother Gerry, and most tenderly in the arms of her Savior, in whose footsteps she so faithfully trod.

Kay will be memorialized in a private service on Monday, December 21, which will be recorded and available at www.goffmortuary.com . You are warmly invited to don a mask and pay respects the evening before from 6-8 pm at Goff Mortuary, 8090 S. State Street in Midvale. She will then be laid to rest next to her beloved parents in the Redmond Cemetery, 200 West 500 North, 2:30 pm Monday afternoon. In lieu of flowers and in memory of her generous spirit, please consider making a contribution to a favorite charity.
