Lurene Mackey Thomson

Our dearly beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Florence LuRene Mackey Thomson, age 92, of Midvale, Utah, passed away Nov. 21, 2022. She was born to Hite Mackey and Lillian Waller Mackey on Dec. 6, 1929. She was the youngest of two children.

She graduated from Jordan High School. While attending a high school assembly, someone behind her was throwing peanuts in her hair trying to get her attention. She turned around in irritation only to find a very cute young man smiling at her. That same young man became the love of her life. She married Jay Paul Thomson on Sept. 17, 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married for 54 years and their eternal love remains today. Their love created five children; Shauna, Bryan, Jeff, Julie and Jana.

LuRene was a talented and beautiful seamstress who spent countless hours making draperies, bedspreads and quilts to beautify her home. She had a knack for decorating and took great pride in her home’s appearance. She kept a spotlessly clean and immaculate home. We often laughed that after we did our Saturday’s chores, she would come along and give it the “white glove” treatment looking for any dust we left behind on window sills and baseboards.

LuRene was a devoted mother whose life and happiness revolved around her children. She expressed her love stitch by stitch, often staying up into the wee hours of the morning sewing outfits, costumes, Easter and Christmas clothes and even wedding dresses for her children.

LuRene had many childhood friends that she kept near and dear to her throughout her life. And also, as a couple, her and Paul had a large group of friends who meant so much to them. They would take turns having home parties and went on many outings and fun vacations together. Maintaining friendships was an integral part of their lives.

LuRene’s greatest joy was her precious grandchildren and great grandchildren. She adored each and every one of them. She was a loving and supportive grandma. She attended many of their activities, school programs, dance recitals, sporting events and graduations. Each of them have special memories with her. They all loved their Grandma dearly.

LuRene conducted her life with great class and dignity. She steadfastly stayed true to her beliefs and convictions as a faithful servant of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints.

LuRene is survived by her five children: Shauna (Todd) Carlson, Morgan; Bryan (Lori) Thomson, South Jordan; Jeff (Michelle) Thomson, Sandy; Julie (Kirk) Newman, Cottonwood Heights; Jana Wagner, Riverton, 17 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, father, mother, brother Ken Mackey, and granddaughter Kristen Thomson.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2022 at Anderson & Goff Mortuary, 11859 South 700 East, Draper, Utah 84020, with a viewing at 10:00 a.m. and funeral at 11:00 a.m. Interment, Elysian Burial Gardens.
