Lloyd Mckay Sutcliffe, son of Hiram Sutcliffe from England and Ada Petersen Sutcliffe from Pinedale, AZ, was born July 3, 1930 in Los Angeles, CA. He passed into his Heavenly Father’s arms peacefully from home the morning of October 29, 2024.
Growing up, Lloyd dearly loved his family and their two pet dogs, both named Carlo. He appreciated history, his country and learning. Early schooling included Oak Street Elementary School were he participated in the School Safety Committee. While attending Cozier Intermediate School he was the editor of the school newspaper. He also acted in school plays while attending Inglewood High School.
Being a Sutcliffe and a Petersen, he learned the value of hard work at an early age. His first official employment entailed the early morning delivery of the LA Herald Express, riding up and down many hills on his bicycle. He became proficient at throwing newspapers smack dab to the front door. As his legs gained strength he took on 2 and then 3 routes and in this way contributed to his families income.
His favorite job was being a stock clerk at Serve All Market with his best friends Ray Ely and Richard Fisher. Lloyd was the type of fellow that valued kindness, compassion and patience. But once a close friend, Lloyd released his sense of humor, bold honesty and quick forgiveness, a formula for true and lasting friendships. He was a devoted family member and friend. He was honest, kind and tolerant.
Lloyd applied himself and excelled at all jobs he took, from janitorial and clerk positions to construction work. This culminated in running his own business. Through the Fisher Brothers he learned home construction, teaching him what he needed to become a general building contractor and finishing carpenter. He also loved learning, attending college full time while also working full time. He enjoyed many different subjects with his favorites being math, physics and writing. He was an accomplished story teller, often leaving his listeners in tears from laughing. He was a member of Toastmasters with his favorite stories from real life experiences driving bus for Salt Lake City lines, now Utah Transit Authority.
True to form, Lloyd garnered dear friends while working at Hercules Aerospace. Here he met Merwin Jensen and Dean Trump. Dean and Lloyd bet on who would win the University of Utah vs Brigham Young University football games. They could laugh for hours. Lloyd also enjoyed playing cards, particularly Pinocle with Beth and their best friends Merwin and Sharon.
Lloyd was a lifelong learner, often doing his own research and forming his own opinions. He loved reading, storytelling and writing. He honed his writing skills through practice and from several home study certificate courses. While attending Salt Lake Community College, University of Utah and Brigham Young University he changed his major three times. He only lacked a few classes for full degrees but became fully immersed in his love of nature and trees and chose instead to open his own business.
Lloyd was a nurseryman and landscaper from 1966 through 1986. He is remembered for his free advise and help to family, neighbors and friends. His strong intellect made him the “go to person” for information. This being a time before the internet.
Lloyd enjoyed baseball, basketball, and fishing on the Pacific Ocean. He was fond of math and would calculate how long it would take to arrive at a destination while driving there. He also enjoyed cards and playing the ponies because he could use his math skills while playing. He was fascinated with physics and the mysteries of our Universe, often writing his own physics formulas.
Lloyd was a champion for the less advantaged as well as as those in his community. He was on the Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee and he also ran for Draper City Council in 1995. He encouraged then small town Draper to embrace thoughtful growth that served the people of Draper over the interests of developers.
Lloyd most cherished his wife, children and extended family. Lloyd served an LDS mission in the Ft Worth/Dallas area where he welcomed being assigned a Lead Missionary. Here he diligently studied the Bible and amiably debated publicly with other religious leaders, opening his mind to new concepts. During his North Central Texas Mission his parents moved to Utah. While visiting them, he met the love of his life Beth Garfield. Lloyd fell head over heals and remained in love with her for life. They shared 71 dedicated years together.
