Linda Diane Johnson Mansfield peacefully passed away at the age 85 on October 19th, 2024 after many visits from family and loved ones.
Linda was the 11th of 12 children, born on June 13th, 1939 to Phoebe Lucina and Oscar Wilhelm Johnson in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where she grew up on her family’s farm. Family was so dear to her heart, as she cherished and loved the relationships she had with her parents and many siblings. Linda shared a particularly special relationship with her sister, Dixie, the 12th of her siblings. She also adored her children and grandchildren, never missing a birthday card opportunity.
Linda had a profound love for music, which was an integral part of her life. She was skilled in piano, organ, vocals, directing, and teaching. Thousands were influenced and blessed by her talents, which she loved to share, bringing harmony and joy to so many. She spent 11 years performing with the Salt Lake Symphonic Choir, which took her to numerous performance venues across Utah. In 1985, Linda was instrumental in establishing a community production of Handel’s Messiah in Midvale City, a beloved tradition that continued annually for over 25 years under her guidance and dedication.
She attended Ricks College, now BYU-Idaho, where she met her husband, Dean, on a blind date. They married on September 10th, 1958, in the Logan temple. She and Dean then attended Brigham Young University, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree and teaching credentials in secondary education. Linda went on to impart knowledge and wisdom as a dedicated teacher. The majority of her career was teaching US History to junior high students. Linda retired in 2004 and enjoyed international as well as domestic travel.
Linda’s life was marked by her sweet nature and sharp intellect. These traits were sprinkled with her sassy spirit, and she could always be counted on for a groaning, “punny” joke. Her life was also rooted in the teachings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and enhanced by activity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she loved the family centered focus. For nine years, Linda served a church service mission as a docent at the Museum of Church History and Art, a role that she loved. During this time, she shared her knowledge of history, love for music and the fine arts, and testimony of the Savior with so many visitors that she met.
Linda leaves behind a legacy of love and is survived by her children Melanie Evans (Don), Michelle Anderson (David), and Jason Mansfield (Stephanie), her sister Dixie Johnson (Ron), and her cherished posterity of ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Her husband Dean Mansfield preceded her in death. Linda’s memory will be forever cherished by her family, friends, and the many lives she touched.
