Leo Kay Hortin

Our beloved curmudgeon has gone on to his Heavenly Father, and we will miss him dearly. Leo Kay Hortin was born the second son of Eugene and Pearl Franson Hortin on April 26, 1926, in Oakley, Utah.

He learned how to work hard on the family farm, and his admiration and love for his parents and his brothers knew no bounds-confirming to us that his reunion with them was one of joy.

After graduation from South Summit High School, Kay left for two years of service in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Daily. He returned afterward to Utah State University. He was employed with Hi-Land Dairy for 42 years as a loyal and trusted worker.

The highlight of his life occurred on November 2, 1948. He married his eternal companion, Joan Watson, in the Salt Lake Temple. They spent over 68 years together serving, loving and laughing together. "We never quarreled, but often had brisk conversations."

We love you, Kay, for your many years of unconditional love and service to your family, friends and many Church members through callings which included Bishoprics, Bishop of the East Midvale 2nd Ward, Stake High Councilor, and service as a missionary with his beloved wife in the Toronto Canada Mission.

Kay will always be remembered by his loved ones as tough on the outside and tender on the inside. It was his priority to care dearly for his family, to be a genuine friend, and to always serve others.

Kay is survived by his wife Joan; children Steven (Ozeanna), Von (Karla), Howard (Mary Sue), and Kyle (Tammy); 17 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by his parents and siblings Gwen, Dale, Dee and Kent.

Funeral will be at the Midvale 2nd Ward Chapel, 7250 South 300 East, on Friday, May 5, 2017, at 11 am. Viewing prior to service from 9:30 to 10:45 am. Interment will be at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
