Layne Holmes Thorup

Loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and uncle, Layne Holmes Thorup passed away unexpectedly from a pulmonary embolism on March 14th, 2023. He was 62 years old. Layne was born at Cottonwood hospital in Murray, Utah on January 26th, 1961 to Donald Thorup and Dona Holmes. He grew up in West Valley City. He graduated from Granger High School in 1979 and went on to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Tokyo North Japan Mission from 1980 to 1982. Layne and his sweetheart Carolyn were sealed for time and all eternity on December 17th, 1982 in the Jordan River Temple. He then graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in 1987. Layne and Carolyn were married for 40 years. They have four children together, Jessica, Stephanie, Jeffrey, and Rebecca.

Layne had many amazing talents and qualities. As a young man he enjoyed water skiing and used to brag about being able to slalom. He also was an avid motorcycle rider. He loved to cook for his family for Sunday dinners and also cooked amazing Japanese food. Layne was very intelligent in computers and math and spent countless hours helping his children and grandchildren with math and computer science homework. He was the hardest worker you could know and would be the first to offer to help with anything his family and friends may have needed. Layne was patient, calm, kind and had a warm sense of humor.

Spending time with his family was Layne’s passion in life. He loved to travel the world with his wife and friends and had many memorable trips camping, boating, and going to the beach with his family. He also took any chance he could to play board and card games with family and friends. Other hobbies he enjoyed included watching Sci-Fi movies and series, attending rock concerts, seeing plays and movies with his wife, hot tubbing, and riding his motorcycle up American Fork Canyon.

Layne had great faith and a strong testimony of the Gospel and served in many capacities within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Some of these callings included Sunday School President, primary teacher, executive clerk in a bishopric, and he was serving as a Sunday School teacher and stake baptism coordinator with his wife, Carolyn at the time of his passing. Layne and Carolyn especially enjoyed their service mission at the women’s prison and had a significant impact on the lives of the women that they served and loved.

Layne is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Pearce Thorup; children, Stephanie (Shane) Jones, Jeffrey (Sarah) Thorup, and Rebecca (Kyle) Wheelhouse; siblings, Lance, Launa, and Leigh; and grandchildren, Caden, Parker, Drew, Kate, Henry, Owen, and Kira. He is preceded in death by his daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and William Davis; parents, Don and Dona Thorup; and his sisters, Linda Lingard and Lori Thorup.
