Karen was born on 26 August 1951 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany; her father and mother, Thomas James Kelly and Mabel Louise Herring, were serving there in the U.S. Army of Occupation after World War II. She was the youngest of four sisters. Mary Margaret Kelly Hobbs, Patricia Ann Kelly Brisson, and her beloved twin sister Kathryn Hale Kelly Robertson, are her surviving older sisters.
Karen married Bruce John Marvin Dean on 14 August 1979 in Manti, Utah, after having served as a U.S. Army Nurse between 1973-1979, with notable service at the U.S. Army Hospital in Okinawa, where she met her husband. She was forever nicknamed by her husband as "Hotlips," after the MASH TV series character.
Karen is survived by four children: Erin Eliza Beth Dean Ram of Lehi, Utah; Kathryn Eileen Dean of Guangzhou, China; Stuart Martin Dean of Manila, The Philippines; and Colin Thomas Dean of Sandy, Utah.
Karen is survived by six grandchildren: Malia Dean Ram, Ocean Sebastian Dean, Maple Juliet Dean, Summer Victoria Dean, Ryan Shamus Dean, and Evan Miles Dean.
Karen became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when she was 22 years old. She served in a variety of church callings over the years, and was devoted to serving her God and her family, her friends and community. She was particularly active in volunteering at free medical clinics.
She is survived by her six nephews and nieces: Christoper Neill Hobbs, Mary Katherine Hobbs Carpenter, Tiffany Ann Brisson Chenery, Ryan Kelly Robertson, Joel Ivey Robertson, and Katherine Tanner Robertson Jackson.
She is also remembered with love by two dear friends from her Okinawa days: James Jenson and his wife Donna, and Calvin Kremin and his wife Wendy.
Her husband Bruce misses her greatly, but also rejoices in the promises made by our loving God that he will be reunited with Karen throughout all eternity.
