Joyce Margaret Bracken

Joyce Margaret Rossman Huber Bracken passed away October 7, 2020 in Nephi, Utah. She was born June 16, 1930, to Rodney Walter Rossman and Ortrude Louise Davids in Poughkeepsie, New York. In her teens she was adopted by Frances Charles Huber, Sr.

Joyce attended a one room school on Pumpkin Lane in Clinton Corners, New York. In 1940, the Hubers moved from the farm and eventually settled in North Newington, Connecticut. Joyce graduated from Newington High School in 1947. After graduation she worked for an insurance company in Hartford. During the years the family lived in Newington the branch of the LDS church they attended in Hartford had a responsibility to raise funds to build an LDS chapel. Even the children and youth participated. Joyce raised her allotted amount by selling cakes and cookies at work. Even though she didn't ever get to see its construction, she had donated her share.

The LDS branch in Hartford, where the Huber family attended happened to be where Dwain began his mission. After his mission they corresponded, and a brave and spunky Joyce traveled by train to Utah where they were sealed in the Manti Temple June 27, 1949.

Dwain attended Utah State University in Logan. When Dwain graduated, they spent two enjoyable years on Promontory Peninsula, where he taught in a one room grade school. Subsequently they settled in Nephi, where they raised their seven children.

The family worked hard and played hard boating and traveling. Joyce made memories tending children in her home. She became the distributor for the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News in 1974. She loved working with and mentoring the many carriers for 24 years. In addition, she became a rural mail carrier, traveling between Nephi and Rocky Ridge for almost thirty years.

Joyce had many church callings including ward and stake Beehives. When Cub Scouting first came to Nephi, in about 1960, Joyce became a dedicated, "Mrs. Cub Scout." She served as a den leader and District Round Table Commissioner for many years. Her favorite years in Cub Scouting were with Dwain, when he was called at age seventy-three to be the Cub Master, which raised eyebrows because of his age. Joyce said, "We wowed them!" Joyce's favorite calling was serving as the drama director (twice), directing programs, plays, ward musicals and road shows.

In 1989-90 the couple served an eighteen-month mission in Jacksonville, Florida. There they served refugee Cambodians, whom they loved.

Joyce is survived by six of her children, Stephen (Joy) of Lindon, Mark (Debbie) of Woodland Hills, Matt (Nylene) of Enoch, Rebecca Bracken Aswad (John) of Nephi and Centerville, Debbie Mosteller (David) of Nephi, and MaryAnn Bradley (Mark) of St. Louis, MO, 42 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, her brothers Chuck Huber (Debby) of SLC, Walt Rossman of Cupertino, CA; sister-in-law Mary Steele of SLC, foster brother, Frans Speters of SLC, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son John, and grandson John-David and her husband, Dwain.

Funeral services are Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 11:30 am at the Vine Bluff Cemetery. Bring your own chairs and please allow ushers to direct your seating location. Viewing from 10:30-11:15 at the Anderson Funeral Home.
