Joseph Scott Ferrin, age 81, of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away on Thursday evening, October 26, in the hospital in Murray, Utah. He grew up in Salt Lake City, graduating in the second class of Highland High School. Scott was a member of the Utah National Guard, and he served a mission to the Alaska-Canadian Mission for two years. He then attended the University of Utah, graduating in business and worked at Zions Bank. He returned to the University, obtaining his teaching certificate and began his teaching career at William Penn Elementary for 30 years, teaching more than 1,000 fifth and sixth grade students.
While attending Highland High School he participated in football, basketball, and baseball. Scott was a talented left-handed pitcher, and the major league Cleveland Indians was interested in signing him to a contract until he injured his shoulder during his senior year. He was also interested and performed in school productions, including “The King and I.” After he retired from teaching, he appeared in many plays and musicals in Salt Lake County. He also enjoyed attending many productions around the State from Salt Lake to Saint George.
Scott has remained very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had a strong testimony of the Savior. He enjoyed many friendships in his ward and shared his testimony with those he knew.
Scott was one of three children of Joseph M. and Gretchen Ferrin, and they along with his sister, Joyce, predeceased him. He is survived by his brother, Dr. David Bruce Ferrin, of the State of Washington. He is survived by many dear friends who will miss him, including Jessica Butler, Bob and Nancy Moss, Dean and Colleen Menlove, Don and Caroline Yacktman, Steve and Marcia Margetts, Gary and Diane Thompson, Dave and Mayvonne Wetzel, and many more. Much appreciation goes to his Bishop, Elders Quorum and others in his ward who have cared and visited him these last several weeks.
A viewing will be held November 2, 2023 at 10 am at Goff Mortuary, 8090 South State Street, Midvale, Utah, immediately followed by a Memorial service at 11 am.
