Longtime Sandy resident Joan Brandon Alleman passed away quietly at her home on February 2, 2016. She was 93. Joan was born in Brisbane, Australia in October of 1922, to Roland and Dorothy Brandon. She met her future husband, Arthur Marshall Alleman while Art was serving in the United States Army Air Force. Joan was proud to be a WWII veteran herself, serving in the Australian Air Force as an aerial photograph interpreter. Joan and Art were married on September 21, 1944, and Art returned to active duty shortly thereafter. Joan arrived in the US in 1946 as a War Bride, with her infant daughter, Judy. Joan and Art settled in Sandy and raised a family. Art passed away in 1984.
Throughout her life, Joan pursued a love of music and of photography. As a long time member of the Photochrome Club, she produced numerous award-winning images, which were exhibited widely.
Joan shared her wonderful singing voice with the Salt Lake Oratorio Society, Hilltop Methodist church choir and the Hilltop seniors' group Silver Songbirds. Her tenure at Hilltop Methodist church spanned nearly seven decades. She was active both in photographic and musical communities well into her late eighties. She was also an enthusiastic supporter of youth choral activities.
Joan and Art were blessed with four children, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. A daughter, Shirley Sue and a son, James preceded Joan in death. She is survived by her sister, Shirley (Hans) Lener, daughters Judy (Lee) Taylor and Marsha (Steve) Strode, all of Sandy, and their progeny.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 20, at 11 a.m. at Hilltop Methodist Church, 985 E 10600 S, Sandy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to any youth choral programs.
