South Jordan - Jean Beckstead Bateman, age 83, died peacefully at her home on February 28, 2015.
She was born August 26, 1931, to L. Earl Beckstead and Helen Brown May Beckstead. She was a graduate of Jordan High School. On August 22, 1950, she married Glen Wallace Bateman of West Jordan in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
She worked as a private secretary for Bagley, Kammeran Brokerage Company and has been a piano teacher since 1955. She loved teaching piano to many family members and friends.
Jean was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served with her husband in the regional mission-Bingham Canyon and the Dominican Republic Santiago Mission. She also was a service missionary at the Church History Museum for 21 years. She was a teacher in all church auxiliaries, Stake and Ward Primary counselor, Ward Relief Society President and Stake Young Women's President. She loved music and was a Regional, Stake and Ward Choir leader and chorister. She was an organist for many years, recently serving at the Jordan River Temple Baptistry.
Jean loved scouting. She was a District, Stake and Ward Scout Leader. She also served on the Oakcrest Girl's Camp Committee for 11 years. She loved working with the youth.
Jean was an active participant in her community and took great pride in South Jordan as a great-great-granddaughter of the original settler of South Jordan, Alexander Beckstead. She was the director of a women's singing group (Le Dolce Singers). She served on many community committees including the South Jordan Historical Committee and as a Docent at the Gale Center in South Jordan.
Preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brother Nile Beckstead, son-in-law Brent Wilson and grandson Richard Bateman. Survived by sisters, Coleen Ashby (Henry); Ardith Newbold (Bruce); RuthAnn Hooper (Richard); children, Janet Benzon (Wayne); Brent Bateman (Karma); Scott Bateman (Lucille); Mark Bateman (Debra); Kaye Wilson; Norman Bateman (Rebecca); Jeanene Bailey (Todd); James Hale (Lisa) and dear friend, Luane Jensen.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 11:00 AM at the South Jordan Utah Country Park Stake Center, 2447 West 11400 South, South Jordan, Utah. Friends may call at the same Stake Center on Friday, March 6, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. Interment, South Jordan Cemetery.

She enjoyed music, reading, cooking, camping, traveling, gardening and being with all of her family. She was so proud of her 7 children, 1 foster son and their spouses, 58 grandchildren including spouses and 38 great-grandchildren. They were the light of her life.
