Janice Louise Blackmer, 74, daughter of Ulysses S. Brown and Katherine Virginia Brown, passed away April 4, 2018 in West Jordan, Utah.
She was born April 18, 1943 in Long Beach, California.
Her father Ulysses S. Brown was serving in the Navy at the time of her birth and she moved with her mother back to Boston, Massachusetts during the time of his service. She eventually returned with her mother to California to be with her grandparents until her father returned from the war.
Jan grew up in the southern California area, and graduated from Whittier HS in 1962. After working a few odd jobs, Jan attended BYU-Provo for one year before hiring on as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines. Her career with delta spanned 40 years, where she lived in LA, Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta. While living in Atlanta, Jan got together with her future husband, Benn Blackmer, who was living in Los Angeles at the time. The two had grown up in the same ward in the Whittier California Stake, but did not pursue a relationship until both were older. They eventually married in 1988 in the Los Angeles Temple. After staying in the LA area for around 3 years, the two moved to the Salt Lake area, where they lived for the last 27 years of her life.
Jan had a vibrant personality, with a great love for people and animals. She served in many capacities in the LDS Church, but she had an especial liking for her last calling as the activity day leader with the 9-year-old girls of the Jordan Oaks 4th Ward. The last few years of her life were spent serving in this capacity in the church as well as helping to take care of her mother. On April 4, 2018, Jan met with an untimely death having succumbed to a heart attack.
She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Donna Lynn Emerson Brown, and her father. Janice is survived here by her mother, Katherine Virginia Brown, and her husband Benn Blackmer.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 10, at 12:00 Noon at the Jordan Oaks 4th Ward, 9353 S. Vistawest Drive, West Jordan, where there will be a viewing starting two hours prior to the services. Interment will be in the Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, California.
