Janet Ellen Hawkes June 22, 1939 ~ June 18, 2015 (75 years) Janet Ellen Hawkes (ne Glass) was born of wonderful parents Ellen Petersen Glass and Arthur Garrett Glass on June 22, 1939 in Long Branch, New Jersey. She graduated from this life to life eternal on June 18, 2015. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and those she willingly and compassionately served. Janet is survived by her husband of 56 years Sidney C. Hawkes, whom she married at Long Branch, New Jersey during January 1959; her two sons Keith Douglas and Donald David; their wives Adriana and Nannette Grace, respectively; and a daughter-like addition to our family Trena and her husband Jeff; her brother David Garrett Glass and his wife Linda Peterson Glass; numerous nieces and nephews. The greatest joys in her life called her Nana or Nana Great and included 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. During her lifetime she excelled at every endeavor, whether it be as a military wife, education, social, professional, service, leadership, administrating, family, cooking, music, arts and crafts, sewing, gardening, etc. Most important to her was how she treated those she came in contact with. With the brightness of her smile, the generosity and love within her heart, and her positive nature she hoped that those very attributes would be her lasting legacy. For the wife, mother, and nana that is no longer with us here, we can confidently state that her goal was indeed achieved. Initially, she was raised in the Episcopalian faith. Later, in her adult years she sought after a little something more, and was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gardena, California in December, 1973. She always accepted every church position she was called to including that of Primary President, Young Women's President, Stake Young Women's Presidency, and Seminary teacher. To her last day here on earth she was beloved by those young people that she served. Her marriage to her husband Sidney C. Hawkes was solemnized in the Los Angeles California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January, 1974. In total, Janet and Sidney enjoyed a full and rich experience together for 56 years, and, in accordance with our beliefs, it will continue on throughout eternity. We as a family would like to sincerely send out our gratitude for the love, compassion, and service that was provided to Janet, a tremendous wife, mother, Nana, Nana Great, and friend. A specific thank you to Huntsman Cancer Institute and Hospital. Additionally, to every medical professional, team, emergency personnel, and organization that through their dedicated service kept her with us for 10 years after diagnosis.
