Janet Gilstrap Matson Hankerson passed away on November 22, 2016 at her home. She was 85.
Janet was born on September 22, 1931, to Olive and James Gilstrap in Bayfield, Colorado. She had one sibling, Wilma Jenkins Boyd, who predeceased her in 2005. Janet grew up in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah as her dad worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Her love of Native American Culture continued throughout her life.
She graduated from Alterra High School in Roosevelt, Utah where she excelled at sports and the marching band. She then attended Westminster College in Salt Lake City where she met her first husband, Robert James Matson. Janet and Robert had three sons while living in Powder Wash, Colorado. They later moved their family to Midvale, Utah. They were divorced in 1976 and Robert predeceased her in 2005. Janet continued to reside in their home on Twin Peaks Street for the next 56 years. Janet later married Donald Hankerson who predeceased her in 1986.
Janet is survived by her sons, Stephen James Matson (Kathleen), Vernal, Utah; David Thomas Matson (Deborah), San Tan Valley, Arizona; and Robert Edward Matson, Bluffdale, Utah; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and 2 nephews. Janet loved them all greatly and nothing was more important than her family, although, she treated everyone as family. We will all miss the time spent with her and her wonderful cooking. She could take leftovers and truly make a feast for all! Janet loved to garden and share her bounty. She made the most delicious plum jam that is treasured and will be remembered forever.
Janet cared for so many friends and family members in their final days and was determined that her family would not have to take care of her. She was amazingly independent and strong and her final wish came true. The family will have a private graveside service when her remains are lovingly carried to her family plot in Bayfield, Colorado.
