Iona Goff Shields, age 98, passed away on December 31, 2015. She was born in Sandy, Utah, on July 9, 1917, to Clarence Edgar and Octivia Mae Walker Goff. She was the oldest of seven children, and due to her mother's illness, quit school before graduating to help raise her siblings. It was a lot of responsibility at a young age. She was very hardworking and fiesty.
In 1937, she married Richard (Dick) W. Shields. Her fiestiness earned her the loving nickname of "Sarge" given to her by her husband. She never lost that fiestiness right to the very end.
Iona loved doing ceramics and her specialty was making beautiful porcelain lace dolls. These dolls are treasured by her family. She also loved reading, needlepoint, crocheting and gardening. Her yard was a showplace of gorgeous flowers. Because of this love of flowers, she worked in a floral shop for many years.
She enjoyed time spent at her cabin in Woodland. She was a wonderful cook. We will miss her banana cream pie, carrot pudding and tender pheasant. Her family has tried, but no one could cook pheasant like her. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints serving in many positions. She deeply loved her family. She will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Marvin, Wayne and Arliss Goff; sister Lorna Burgon, and her husband Dick.
She is survived by a brother, Alvern Goff, sister Irene Dent, son Jack Shields (Linda), daughter Colleen Harper (Greg), 6 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 7 step great grandchildren, 5 great, great grandchildren and 4 step great, great grandchildren.
We wish to express our deep gratitude for the personal and loving care she received at Legacy, Legacy Cottage, Legacy House in South Jordan and Brighton Hospice.
