Howard Ted Gorringe died September 26, 2015 from Lewy-Body Dementia. Ted was born November 22, 1927 in Murray, Utah to Ruby Rowe Smith and John Howard Gorringe. He spent most of his life in the Midvale area. He graduated from Jordan High School and attended BYU for 1½ years.
He served in the Army in 1946-47 and was sent to Tokyo, Japan during the occupation. He met Alice Hopkins of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at his ward and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 12, 1953. They have been married 62 years. They are the parents of 3 lovely daughters, Susan Smith, Barbara Gadd and Linda Webb.
Ted served a 2½-year mission in Tokyo, Japan from 1949-51, after which he served a construction mission there with his wife and 3 daughters. He was delighted to be with his family, and back among the people that he loves so much. He was excellent with wood and built a beautiful kitchen in their home where they have lived for 50 years. After he retired, he built a beautiful bookcase for each one of his daughter's families, which they cherish. He was known in our family and the neighborhood as "Mr. Fix It." If there was anything broken, his wife, his children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren just knew he could fix it. Sometimes even by making a particular part needed. He was an expert cabinet maker and worked at Fetzer's Salt Lake Cabinet and Fixture Co. for 11 years. He was employed by United Airlines and retired from there after 25 years of service.
He served in several callings in the LDS Church and always did his best at whatever he was called to do. His yard was always immaculately groomed and beautiful. He mowed his lawn up until two months ago.
He is survived by his wife, Alice, his three daughters, Susan Smith (Briant), Barbara Gadd (Randy) and Linda Webb (Michael), 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, brother, and great-grandson, Liam Webb.
Thanks to Holladay Healthcare for their loving care of Ted.
