Guadalupe Angeles

Guadalupe Santos Angeles passed away on March 5, 2018 at the age of 94.

Guadalupe, also known by family and friends as "Lupe" or "Achay" was born on February 27, 1924 in Manila, Philippines.  She lived through the horrors of World War II in the Philippines when the country fell to the invading Japanese army.  To survive, she worked as an interpreter for them because she learned and became fluent in Nippongo, Japanese language.

The Americans, who previously occupied the country, returned in 1945 to liberate it from Japanese rule.  Two years later, Lupe met Policarpio Angeles and were married in 1947. Together they had 11 children!

Due to the economic hardships in the aftermath of the war, and later by the excesses of the Marcos regime in the 1970s, life had become difficult for many Filipinos.  Lupe had to work outside the home to augment the family's income.

Lupe was baptized with her children into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1975 in Quezon City. She served diligently in the Relief Society Organization as President.

By the 1980s, many Filipinos wanted to flee their country because of widespread economic dislocation.  Lupe came to America in 1980 to join two of her daughters.

She became a US citizen in 1992 while in New York City, where she first lived. She was able to get a job at New York University. There, she worked as a secretary. Many in school, particularly young students, were impressed with her speed typing on the electric typewriter.

In December 1996, her children celebrated the 50th wedding anniversary of their parents Poly and Lupe in Manila.  Unable to bear anymore the cold Utah climate, Poly visited the Philippines, and passed away in Manila in 2004 due to illness. She would return to the US where she continued to be active in the Sandy Senior Center's activities.

If Lupe had one desire, it was to see her children be able to get a better chance in life. Even though she had become ill, she tried to hang on for as long as she could so that she can bring her other children to America. She succeeded in that.

Lupe had to live with asthma all her life.  It had slowly damaged her lungs. Yet she managed to live up to her 94th birthday. A week later, on March 5, 2018, she passed away in the care of her daughters in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Survived by her 11 children, Evelyn (Jimmy), Myrna, Edgar (Lily), Gladys, Yolanda (Richard), Marilou (Conrad), Joseph (Julie), Marissa, Edna (James), Nilda (David), Heidi (Rico); 27 grandchildren, 6 Great Grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Crescent View Stake Center, 11626 South 300 East, Draper, Utah. Viewings will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday evening at Anderson & Goff Mortuary, 11859 South 700 East, Draper, Utah and from 9-10 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment, Crescent Cemetery.
